exactly.... stealth fighters have always been detectable by the holes they leave in the radar returns and also in the disturbances in the air they fly through.... also there is another method of finding them that relies on using two or more radar sets and examining the replies...Old IronReply togws9
Argue angels on pinheads as much as you like - if being undetected was the point, there was never the slightest chance that somebody wouldn't learn how to detect it, without delay. And they did. So what is the point of the new grossly over-expensive fighters? Ummm. Oh, I know - the people who launch them won't be able to track them to their target or see them get shot down. Only their enemies will. Right. Top idea. Great investment.Ben Russell-Gough
Not impossible: No sensor and no countermeasure is forever. Stealth made conventional radar of reduced efficiency and different solutions have been explored by all sides. It was inevitable that, eventually, someone would come up with a magic bullet. If it's true, the money invested in things like the F35 Lightning-II would suddenly seem very, very ill-considered.t2ewReply toBen Russell-Gough
Well, this bullet is still radar. And stealth still works, dependent on the radar's transmit characteristics. It's which radars you want the stealth ability to work against. Radars have very different characteristics depending on their purpose - stealth still works for the vast majority of radars that are trying to aim something to put holes in me!ChrisCooperReply toBen Russell-Gough
The advantage of stealth isn't being totally invisible, it's being invisible in more situations than without stealth. An example is that during the first Gulf War, the F117 stealth fighters were able to slip through gaps between the radar that other planes couldn't, and hit Baghdad and take out the command and control.Hontobogo
Long wave length Battle of Britain radar can see Stealth Aircraft. Problem is mounting it in an aircraft. The other way to see Stealth is to get the radar above the Aircraft and look down. One on one against a fighter it makes a difference.Brit in Philippines
Invent the most war winning technology ever and then let your potential enemies all about it? Reall?ChrisCooperReply toBrit in Philippines
Sometimes telling others your capability (even if it's over-exaggerated) can be useful. It can make them have second thoughts about attacking, and particularly if you can get them to believe you have a technology you don't it can cause them to waste resources trying to counter that technology or to develop the same themselves.Steviebhoy
Radars have always been able to detect stealth aircraft. They're not actually invisible. The issue is Radar Cross-Section (RCS). The RCS of an F-22 or an F-35 is maybe the same as a tennis ball. That makes it very difficult for radars to differentiate it from, for example, a bird.
