It's not stealth, it's low observable.

exactly.... stealth fighters have always been detectable by the holes they leave in the radar returns and also in the disturbances in the air they fly through.... also there is another method of finding them that relies on using two or more radar sets and examining the replies...

I can't see that.

Argue angels on pinheads as much as you like - if being undetected was the point, there was never the slightest chance that somebody wouldn't learn how to detect it, without delay. And they did. So what is the point of the new grossly over-expensive fighters? Ummm. Oh, I know - the people who launch them won't be able to track them to their target or see them get shot down. Only their enemies will. Right. Top idea. Great investment.

China needs to get radar to find idiots!!!!! the world would be a better place

Theres a radar station in Germany which can detect the condensation trail of any air plane. I think its safe to say that as soon as two industrialized nations clash on the battlefield, stealth technology wont be a major issue in terms of air warfare.

Nice. There goes all the money that the US used to make planes stealthy.

Didn't the Serbs shoot down a supposedly undetectable "stealth" aeroplane?

chancelReply toBig Eyes
Shot down by a radar guided missile because the pilot left the bomb-bay doors open.

They have known for years that Long Wave radar as used in the second world war is capable of detecting stealth aircraft.

China has developed stealth radar to detect when the sun is actualy shining throughthe polution on any givin day in Beijing.

Up to 60 mile range. Most Jet can fire their missiles from more than a 100 miles away. Or just fly cruise missiles under the radar. But I do not quite believe it. China come up with a lot of stories like this.

Not impossible: No sensor and no countermeasure is forever. Stealth made conventional radar of reduced efficiency and different solutions have been explored by all sides. It was inevitable that, eventually, someone would come up with a magic bullet. If it's true, the money invested in things like the F35 Lightning-II would suddenly seem very, very ill-considered.

Well, this bullet is still radar. And stealth still works, dependent on the radar's transmit characteristics. It's which radars you want the stealth ability to work against. Radars have very different characteristics depending on their purpose - stealth still works for the vast majority of radars that are trying to aim something to put holes in me!

The advantage of stealth isn't being totally invisible, it's being invisible in more situations than without stealth. An example is that during the first Gulf War, the F117 stealth fighters were able to slip through gaps between the radar that other planes couldn't, and hit Baghdad and take out the command and control.

Long wave length Battle of Britain radar can see Stealth Aircraft. Problem is mounting it in an aircraft. The other way to see Stealth is to get the radar above the Aircraft and look down. One on one against a fighter it makes a difference.

A lot of good 60 mile notice does when aircraft can fly below radar or at over 70,000ft at mk2

Invent the most war winning technology ever and then let your potential enemies all about it? Reall?

Just think what they have not told you about.

Sometimes telling others your capability (even if it's over-exaggerated) can be useful. It can make them have second thoughts about attacking, and particularly if you can get them to believe you have a technology you don't it can cause them to waste resources trying to counter that technology or to develop the same themselves.

In war only passive radar systems are of any use all others are the first targets to be taken out and a waste of time as they tell us where they are simply by operating.

Warfare is always about counteracting your opponents. Design submarine and we develop a destroyer. Build a Battleship and we will build and aircraft carrier. No matter what you build your opponent will try and find a way to negate that advantage. It is the story of warfare.

Quantum entangled photons eh. Must be good then.

Radars have always been able to detect stealth aircraft. They're not actually invisible. The issue is Radar Cross-Section (RCS). The RCS of an F-22 or an F-35 is maybe the same as a tennis ball. That makes it very difficult for radars to differentiate it from, for example, a bird.

Better call off our plan to attack the moon then.

If you had the capability would you tell anyone? We only know about Stealth F117 because it was leaked. If you have a secret weapon. Its in the name.

Taking China off the target list leaves lots of others.

Inevitable. Now the boffins will have to spend more taxpayer money making planes immune to this.
