In this photo taken March 16, 2016, a man takes a photo of the mummified body of revered Buddhist monk Fu Hou in Quanzhou city in southeastern China's Fujian province. The monk, who died in 2012 at the age of 94, was prepared for mummification by his temple to commemorate his devotion to Buddhism. The mummifed remains were then treated and covered in gold leaf, a practice reserved for holy men in some areas with strong Buddhist traditions. (Chinatopix via AP) CHINA OUT[CN]

The monk, Fu Hou, who died in 2012 at age 94 after spending most of his life at the Chongfu Temple on a hill in the city of Quanzhou, in southeastern China, according to the temple's abbot, Li Ren.

The temple decided to mummify Fu Hou to commemorate his devotion to Buddhism — he started practicing at age 17 — and to serve as an inspiration for followers of the religion that was brought from the Indian subcontinent roughly 2,000 years ago.[CN]

Immediately following his death, the monk's body was washed, treated by two mummification experts, and sealed inside a large pottery jar in a sitting position, the abbot said.

When the jar was opened three years later, the monk's body was found intact and sitting upright with little sign of deterioration apart from the skin having dried out, Li Ren said.

The body was then washed with alcohol and covered in layers of gauze, lacquer and finally gold leaf. It was also robed, and a local media report said a glass case had been ordered for the statue, which will be protected with an anti-theft device.

The local Buddhist belief is that only a truly virtuous monk's body would remain intact after being mummified, local media reports said.

"Monk Fu Hou is now being placed on the mountain for people to worship," Li Ren said.

Religion is the use of the yet to be explained to control the yet to be enlightened. As a life long Christian,I feel I can say without any doubt that organized religion and the doctrines they espouse have nothing at all to do with worshiping God and will never lead to a closer relationship with God.[CN]

Both Lola and Stephen had good points. Siddhartha Gautama stated explicitly that suffering ends with renunciation of worldly desires and focus on compassion. Gold is a treasure currency in this world. Gold plating the monk is just another gimmick to attract crowds to donate money to the temple or whatever organization that own this. Gautama was against worshipping such thing. In China, Buddhism has been vastly adulterated with local indigenous religions.[CN]

If you think any form of Buddhism is adulterated or watered down by any other indigenous religion then you have missed the whole point. Even in India there are several sects of Buddhism, before Buddhism made it to China it had already undergone several interpretations through Persian and Middle Eastern traditions. But the bigger picture was preserved.[CN]

According to the article, the temple decided to mummify the monk after his death. No evidence provided to prove monk's will to be mummified. The mummifying process described in this article is questionable. At the end, the "golden monk" is showcased for money making.[CN]

You see, this is something I can't stand about most religion because it is contary to what it teaches, Buddhism practices self and mindfulness but yet again we worship an idol, gold leafed I might add. This monk, if looking down after his death would be turning in disgust.[CN]

Another attempt in creating a tourist trap! I'm Buddhist and I feel this is just appalling, so many Buddhist temples in China have become so capitalistic it's embarrassing! Many temples charge admission, that comes with it's very own souvenir ticket stub. Most also have souvenir shops that sell supposedly Buddhist trinkets. Many elder monks are chauffeured around in luxury vehicles. Just pathetic!

It's similar to the Catholic Church that has certain saints whose bodies don't deteriorate as normal. No harm done, no one hurt and usually the person who is revered has been an extraordinary person. The Buddhists are a peace-loving people (only the Muslims were able to outrage them to the point of violence).
