It's a bit cramped! Farmer granted patent for £500 submarine he built in two months… but there's barely room for ONE person

Zhang Shengwu, a 51-year-old farmer from Ma'anshan, China, built the tiny submarine in just two months[CN]

The vessel's top speed is just seven nautical miles an hour and it's not possible to complete deep dives[CN]

A farmer in south east China has designed and built a submarine for just 5,000 Yuan (£500) but getting in it proves to be a bit of a tight squeeze.[CN]

Zhang Shengwu, from Maanshan in Anhui province, spent two months working on the submarine, which barely has room for one, while his wife was visiting her mother, the People's Daily Online reports. [CN]

人民日报网络版报道，张申雨来自安徽省马鞍山市，他用了两个月时间造出了这艘能勉强容纳一人的潜艇，这段时间他妻子回娘家了。

But despite its size, the 51-year-old farmer managed to get a patent certificate from the State Intellectual Property Office.

The 51-year-old seems to be able to put his mind to anything.

As soon as he graduated from high school, he started selling vegetables. He then went on to work as a carpenter and later in the shipping industry.

Zhang says he enjoys inventing things and one day thought it would be fun to make a submarine.

The finished product is six metres long and just about fits Zhang.

However he's had to install a small pipe that runs to the surface to provide oxygen as the vessel is too small to install gas cylinders.

Zhang says that this limits its diving range and he does regret not thinking of a way to ensure air supply at the time.  

The submarine's top cruising speed is 7 nautical miles per hour according to China.com.

Zhang says that he has big plans for a nautical rescue boat next.
