Photo Catches Eagle Trying to Snatch Little Boy During Bird Show at Australia Park
An eagle tried to snatch a little boy during a recent birds show at Alice Springs Desert Park in Australia's Northern Territory, according to a witness who took a photo of the attack.[CN]
澳大利亚艾利斯泉沙漠公园北区的飞禽秀上一只老鹰妄图抓捕一个小男孩,拍到袭击画面的目击者如是说。
The wedge-tailed eagle flew straight at the child, who was wearing a green hoodie and "kept running his zipper up and down," Christine O'Connell, the witness who took the photo, told BBC News.[CN]
拍照目击者Christine O'Connell告诉BBC新闻频道,这只楔状尾的老鹰径直冲向男孩,他穿着一件绿色连帽衫,一直在上上下下拉他的拉链。
"Those talons are huge he was a very lucky young boy," O'Connell wrote on Instagram. "The show was quickly cancelled and the boy taken off to first aid."[CN]
“那些爪子非常大,这个小男孩真的是走运,”O’Connell 在Instagram上写道。“表演很快被取消,男孩被送去急救。”

The incident occurred during the show last Wednesday, the park confirmed in a statement to local newspaper Northern Territory News.
An "eagle made contact with an audience member," the park stated. "A thorough investigation regarding the circumstances behind this incident is under way and the eagle will be removed from the show while this investigation is ongoing."[CN]

What is there to investigate? I doubt the eagle is going answer any of their questions. I hope they don't euthanize the eagle for acting like an eagle.[CN]
有啥好调查的?我怀疑老鹰会给他们答案么。希望他们别因为这只鹰做自己就把它安乐死。
CharlieK - why should the eagle be destroyed?!? It's a WILD ANIMAL...maybe these animal shows should stop and we let the animals be, not using them for entertainment and/or profit! Your comment is ridiculous.[CN]
CharlieK - 老鹰为啥该绝?!?它们是野生动物...也许不应再有动物表演,我们让动物们释放天性,而不是用它们来取乐或者得利!你说的真荒谬。
Good for the Eagle this happened Down Under. If it happened in America, the U.S. Park Service would have already called in a B-52 Strike to "Euthanize" the Bird. Here in Idaho we had a missing Child from a camp ground in the Leadore area for over a year now and some people are starting to look at this as a possibility.[CN]
i used to think eagles were the biggest predator birds until...i almost hit a full grown owl one night in the street. the dam thing was taller than the hood of my car just standing there. i could see it looking at me over the hood. it was freaking huge. i imagine with the size of it it could have easily taken a small deer or a dog up to like a sheltie. the thing was gigantic. i would not want to mess with owls.
coffee great horned owls, which we have here and the one i saw, usually are around 2 feet tall or so with a wing span of like 4-5 feet. so yeah....from the driver's seat looking down at the sloping car hood i can see a gigantic owl staring at me that's freaking 2 foot+ tall when my car is only 2 and a half feet off the ground and then flying away with a wing span about the width of my car. they are huge.
How much did you have to drink that night? Either that or you must have been smoking some pretty good stuff! Great Horned Owls are normally around two feet in height and around a 4 1/2 to 5 foot wingspan. Golden Eagles and even Wedge Tailed Eagles (native to Australia) have wing spans around 8 feet (females - birds of prey females are around 1/3 larger than the tiercels (males))
"Carrying off a Sheltie??? Pass "that" over here!!!!!
This actually happened mid day in my neighborhood. Joeswansan is the local mushroom guy and known to be high 24/7. Anyhow, my son threw a stuffed owl (approximately 4-6 inches tall) onto his parked car as a joke. Joe started screaming, honking, going nuts, and eventually passed out. Sorry Joe.
Owls aren't that big, they are ambush predators and silent... but they are nowhere near as big as the raptors like eagles and vultures and condors.
The Harpy Eagle is known to #$%$ children.
And the Lammergeyer likes to take the big bones of large animals way up in the air and drop them on rocks to shatter them so the bird can feast on marrow.
I was at the Lincoln Park Conservatory recently and a little boy dropped his stuffed owl into the koi pond. He looked to be on the verge of tears, but one of the staff members fished it out easily. It was pretty funny from a bystander perspective and the koi appeared none the worse for wear.
I've been a Licensed wildlife rehabilitator for 25 years. Working with eagles, vultures, and hawks are a walk in the park compared to owls.
When confined, (caged for treatment prior to release) they throw themselves on their back against the cage and put their talons up and #$%$ ahold of you and then come at your with their beak when you get in to get him out....
Awesome creatures.
Mr. Eagle, were you aware that there was a kid under the green thing you went to grab.
Um, No I was not aware.
Mr. Eagle, Did you deliberately target this child and want to consume him for sustenance.
No, It was a case of mistaken identity. I guess I was not looking at the whole picture. You know I have Eagle Eyes.
Mr. Eagle, one last question, Do you think that this incident is a true indicator of your character.
No, I am a loving bird and just want to do bird things. Sometimes doing bird things around humans means things happen.
One of them loving eagles grabbed a kitten my wife was playing with and ate him. That was no loving bird thing. Every time I eat chicken I enjoy thinking that the chicken is some distant relative of that eagle. I'd barbecue that eagle if I could get my hands on him...
I agree. The eagle was probably going for the bright green hat, because it looked interesting to him. Eagles can see in color...exaggerated color at that. So, the lime green hat would have stuck out to the eagle. He probably wasn't trying to take off with a rather large child, as he knew he had no hope of lifting something that heavy.
If this was in the USA there would first be a media blitz of lawyers from both sides. Then apologies for said behavior of the wild animal, then an announcement that the bird will be sent to rehab because of depression as well as some much needed re-education therapy, then upon release the bird will do community service for a while. And if they jumped through all the politically correct hoops the media will let them off the hook........ Progressive liberals - the USA is looking more and more like the British Empire our founding fathers escaped but was followed here - for what?? Yeap what liberals LOVE the most......... taxation!!! Nope not Obamas' fault but God help the first wild animal thatbsteps out of line here. Hmmm for animal human race relations maybe Obama cam have another "beer summit?" No doubt it would be just as effective as his last leading from behind summit effort. Race relations are going great huh? Sweet upgrades to the public police force too.... First no trial for an American deemed a terrorist and killed on Obamas' word/edict. Now at home a bomb was used on a criminal - no trial. A bomb!!! Way to up those armed to the teeth police Mr Obama - a necessary evil I suppose when all you have is beer summit race relation solutions.
I don't Understand how you Could get Guns on the Streets Easily. If Guns were illegal it would be Extremely Difficult to get them on the Streets. Its not like Drugs that are produced inside homes or can easily be smuggled inside toy cars. Guns need to be manufactured in large scale Facilities. By multi million Dollar Machinery. Guns that are used in Gun Violence Were once purchased Legally by someone at a gun Show or a gun store.
another stupid person ,this will never be a police state.where only #$%$s an cops have guns.your thinking will make us all sheep! guns dont kill people .people do. so if they use a bomb?or a car?its the mentallity of the people doin the crimes not the gun or whatever weapon.youl be the first person to yell foul when a #$%$ with an illegal gun breaks into your house.wake up crimals dont follow laws.your trying to disarm people from protecting theirselves.now if a #$%$ breaks in you can protect yourself .your way an your dead meat.and btw we werent even talking about guns.Troll much.
Dan...Its going to be a long process.. People will get killed by Criminals but in time The total number of guns will Decline making it harder and harder for Criminals to Get them. As it stands now Criminals can get a Gun at a drop of a dime. The point that the commenter was making is that Gun Violence is close to Zero in Australia because Guns are not part of the equation Period. After sandy hook happened and guns weren't abolished, their is no way that this country will change its stance on guns.. Its in the life blood of this country. The earliest americans used guns to free themselves from the british.
Yes, the Australian gun ban seems to be working very well. They haven't had a single mass shooting since it's passage.
That doesn't mean it would work in the US - it wouldn't.
Because the US already has more than 300 million guns compared to the 1 million in Australia at the time of the passage of the laws.
Australia is surrounded by ocean, making it much easier to catch gun smugglers.
Besides, nobody is suggesting such a ban in America, anyway.
The other day, while surfing youtube, I was shocked to see that the GOLDEN eagle...in Peru, and the Andes...(Much larger than the American Bald Eagle and others) will fly out of the sky and take out a 300 lb goat off a cliff! While they may not be able to "fly" away with it... they CAN grab it, and LIFT it sufficiently enough to topple it off the cliff, sending it to it's doom... I watched as these eagles HELD on as the goat was falling- causing both the eagle and goat to crash... However! The eagle seemed unhurt and kept on holding... We see eagles as lightweight, and that harm could come to them just by a little whack or some such.. NOT TRUE!! These creatures are TOUGH! Have a look on Youtube- you'll be amazed! (PS- I've hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Cascades... I'm former Army, and avid outdoorsman! THIS took me by SURPRISE!)
Whoa! I am going to check that out on youtube! There is a video of an eagle going around on FB, showing a bird picking up a toddler and flying off. Luckily, he let go of the child. The family was having a picnic in a park. People need to realize Eagles are STRONG, smart animals. They are wild and therefore, never miss an opportunity for a meal! Scary, but so beautiful.
This happened to me just after I was born. As a premature baby, I was extra small when my parents took me home from the hospital. As my mom was fumbling for her car keys, an eagle swooped down, snatched me from her arms, and flew me to its nest at the top of a telephone pole. It took authorities nearly a week to locate me. By then, I was so used to being raised by a bird that I had no interest in breastfeeding and could only take in food from my mother that had been properly chewed and vomited. You may not believe my story, but I'm "talon" the truth.
I went to a bird show while visiting Melbourne several years ago. The birds were very impressive and well trained. The trainer kept looking up at the sky and seemed nervous. Then she announced that the show would be cancelled and the birds placed in their cages because a rogue eagle kept showing up and had an attraction to one of her birds. We could see the eagle circling above - we all got out of there.
David -- are you aware that golden eagles are capable of killing adult wolves, and have been caught taking down deer, acting alone, on camera traps? Anyone with a small child would be wise to move them out of the area if an eagle appears to be watching them with interest.
David, given the strength and agility of eagles, they could easily swoop down and make an 'attempt' at grabbing your head. Instead, they'd simply claw your eyes out with those massive and razor-sharp talons of theirs'. You stay and watch and let us all know how that turns out for you, okay?
Weight of an average wedge-tail is shy of 8 lbs, or about a quarter slug.
Let's say a wedge-tail hits you from 1800 feet up at a dive speed comparable to a golden eagle, about 150 mph or 220 feet per second. At that speed, it carries about 6050 lbs-ft of energy.
To put this number in perspective, the muzzle energy of a .308 winchester round is about 2700 lbs-ft.
I'd say it's worthwhile keeping an eye on the things.
Relax David, the others are smoking crack or something else. No eagle can kill a adult wolf, and no eagle can lift a 200+lbs goat. Bald eagles are strong, aggressive birds but like everything that flies they are governed by aerodynamics. The wings of an eagle need to support the eight to 12-pound bird as well as whatever the bird is carrying, and best estimates put the lifting power of an eagle at four or five pounds.
Really Gaylynn?! Let face it, anything can hurt including a tiny field mouse. But to blow out of proportion the abilities of what an animal can do. You have one nut claiming eagles can kill wolves and another nit wit stating they saw video of an eagle lifting a 200+lbs goat. Get real people and stop being a bunch of sissies!!!
"My God, it's bird not a lion. Sure an eagle is impressive and symbolic, but give me a break" I do not think Trainer wanted to risk engendering or loosing HIS birds that he spend years training. So he had to rounded up hes own birds, and that is way the show had to be stopped..
Wolfgang: you are mistaken. First of all, you are comparing a true eagle (Aquila audax, the wedge-tailed eagle) to a fish eagle (Halieetus leucocephalus, the bald eagle). True eagles are generally larger and stronger. Second, we're not speaking hypothetically. True eagles have indeed been observed killing large animals. They can't lift them, but they don't have to. And even fish eagles will kill prey too large to carry off; they just eat their fill on the spot after killing it.
BTW, if you look on YouTube, there is video of golden eagles (similar in size to wedge-tailed eagles) killing wolves. Hunters in Kazakhstan and Mongolia still use them for this purpose, training them to strike at the back of the head so as to kill the wolf with the least damage to the pelt. And there is record of an incident in New Mexico in the 1980s where several individuals were attacking cattle, killing calves, until the birds who had learned how to do this were eventually found and removed. A camera trap meant to photograph tigers in Siberia once instead caught a golden eagle taking out a deer. The eagle won.
Like most predators, they'll usually go for smaller and easier prey, and they seldom target humans of any size. But like anyone else, they can make mistakes, and can be overambitious. One of the funniest things I've seen with eagles is videos of bald eagles that have tried taken fish that were too big to carry. They're stubborn, and instead of giving up and flying off, they swim to shore, dragging the fish. A bald eagle is *not* a graceful swimmer. :-P
The eagle was in the show...so far that's 156 halfwits that can't read. Obviously it was trained in such a way that it thought it was being instructed to carry off the green hooded zipper head. It's not rocket science and you people aren't rocket scientists...to say the least!
I think I would have run toward the Eagle waving my arms instead of standing there like an idiot taking pictures of what could have been a tragedy...
I'm noticing this more and more. There was a story about a fishing boat that sank near NY/NJ, another boat came over to rescue the people, 2 are helping... 1 is shooting video on his cell phone... How about YOU help instead of recording??? What if the other 2 guys fell overboard because they couldn't lift someone out of the water, then what?
What's wrong with people?!
I'm sure the person who took the picture was just trying to photograph the show, tracking the bird as it flew, and happened to take the picture just as it hit the kid. This would've happened in an eyeblink -- much too fast to get a camera up and ready, so obviously the camera was already up anyway.
If you really think that the person had time to take their camera out to take the shot don't know how eagles hunt. They don't stay in one spot trying to catch their prey, they swoop down and grab it, if they miss they fly away. The person in front the person taking the picture hasn't even been able to react to the eagle attacking the you can see it is already trying to fly away.
