USA is making a mistake not building a railroad industry up, create jobs, lower transport and travel costs and increase markets. we should be taking one direction of US 80 and 94 from just west of Chicago and put out bids to lay track and maybe give lease to someone to operate, take in money, reduce our maintenance cost of highways and create industry, clean up the air, require US steel and natural gas locomotives, run the first tracks to west coast, then do same with other from north to south, make our own silk road from Alaska to Chile,

You do realize that most shipping companies already make extensive use of railroads, right? They've actually made a major comeback in recent years because they streamlined and standardized the shipping crates used on boats to be transferred from there to tractor-trailer frames then from there to railway cars without uncoupling anything from the trucks.

Amtrak exists for passenger transport, but most people prefer either flight for long distances and driving for shorter ones, so they don't tend to do that well here in the US the way they do in, say, Germany, where gas is about $6.50 a gallon.

Many lessons here. Franklin Delano Roosevelt truly save U.S. from destruction. FDR knew about railroads, about power plans and shipbuilding. He knew that going out ans shoot is not enough. You also have to build. China is now more American than us. They are using key concepts from the American Revolution, emphatically the Washington-Hamilton economic doctrine -- George Washington was kicked out of all US colleges many, many years ago. US RR is in deep decay. Obama knows nothing about it. Obama knows nothing. He keeps talking about war, but, where is the constructive component? When did he quote from Washington, Hamilton, Franklin and all those GREAT patriots who made the US possible, against great odds... etc.I wish Donald Trump knew anything about what I am saying.. regards...

Talk about 'knows nothing', you seem to know nothing about the very very long Chinese history.

This 'new silk road' is 're-invention' of the Chinese 'old silk road'.

The reason, and the only reason, Chinese were able to have a 'miraculous' transformation of their massive society in just over one generation, is that Chinese recalled their lengthy history, which was well written down and kept, from 'ancient' Chinese dynasty to dynasty.

It IS NOT 'wages'!

It is WILL!

When US leaders had to catch the Russians in the 'space race', no one wasted time talking 'wages'.

The focus was on American will to succeed.

Chinese had never allowed the 'wages' (Western obsession) and other superficial distractions to get in their way of huge infrastructure projects.

And incidentally, so did the Africans who built those massive pyramids; they did not concern themselves with nonsense wages.

The UNITY OF PURPOSE of a nation trumps wages and the like.

American can bash China all they want (at least at the politician level). But it doesn't change the fact that American are the ones killing people all around the world wit the war in Iraq, the war in Afghan, the war in Syria. And American continue to engage in interventionist politic in Eastern Europe, South China Sea, with the only goal of expanding American power, control of resources, and contain anyone who may challenge them.

On the other hand, China hasn't killed on foreigner nor occupied one inch of foreign soil. All China do is build trade relations, invest in infrastructure around Asia and the world, and build trade routes, infrastructures that brings countries closer. Sure Chinese does it out of own self interest. but at least China looks to share the interest with its partners, and American only leave a trail of blood and dead bodies on their way to maintain world domination.

America is stuck with defending and promoting Saudi Arabia and Turkey, who are messing them up with their actions in Syria and support for ISIS, they dont seem to understand that alliances are shifting very fast and China and Russia seem to be moving ahead, I feel Donald trump understands thi more than Obama.

As an African I want to tell America that we dont need 'Freedom and Democracy' like you gave to Libya and Iraq. See what China is doing, uniting countries and communities with railways and infrastructure which breeds better friendship among different peoples in the world. You spend so much time pursuing shadows in collusion with terrorists called 'moderates' by your leaders and media in Syria while companies from Russia, China, France, Germany are rushing to Iran to establish businesses. The Persians are not terrorists as portrayed in your media but an educated and enlightened society of over 70m people more advanced than your Wahhabi ally Saudi Arabia.

People seem to hate America over here, Obama is no longer celebrated as 'our son' from Kenya; we dont even want to see him here unlike when he was newly sworn in as US President with so much hope for America which we thought will trickle down to us in Africa, but to us now he is almost a disaster and we even celebrate Bill Clinton more than Obama here.

US officials: Israel requesting $5 billion in annual defense aid

Congressional sources say Jerusalem’s ‘shopping list’ to top $50 billion over decade; negotiations in preliminary stages

BY TIMES OF ISRAEL STAFF November 4, 2015, 11:40 pm 15

Israel is asking the United States for $5 billion in annual defense aid for a decade, beginning in 2017, US congressional sources told Reuters on Wednesday.

The request — a total of $50 billion — is a significant increase from Israel’s current aid package, which stands at close to $3 billion per year( $ 8 millions per day). The sources estimated that the White House and Israel would ultimately agree on a sum between $4 billion and $5 billion (roughly 14 millions per day).

It estimated that Israel, since it is establishment in 1948, received nearly one trillion dollars form the US. Worse Israel lends the money back to the US and collect interests and use the interests instead of the original grants., which will continue bear interests increasing US debt to trillions.. Ridiculous isn't it? Israel is one of the biggest holder of US TREASURY SECURITIES, though it has no debt.

That is why the US has one of the highest tax rate in the world.

Norw imagine how many bullet trains this amount of money could have built.

Quality cargo rail coordinated with major harbors would easily beat the costs of trucks.

Management and construction of High Speed rail needs to be left to the private sector to avoid the

fiasco of California's being rerouted for PC

reasons.

And lite rail should be able to manage ones car.

Either via a ferry platform or cars that can

interface with light rail then drive off their exit.

First it would require the Federals

Most are not used nor kept up to use standards.

@MTB, well said, but first there was a nuke issue in the first place, second only 5% of the nation along with supreme leader calling for Death to America for the internal usage to stay alive.

America is loosing out to other global and regional powers in fostering beneficial relationships with the emerging countries. With Trump's rhetoric and hostility against Muslims and Cruz's promise to tear up the Iran deal on day one wait till one of them gets to the White House. Despite GOP's obstructionism Obama at least has gotten the Iran deal and has opened up to Cuba. Endless wars including the disastrous Iraq war, misadventure in Libya, and kowtowing to Saudis and Sisis have been very costly for us and cannot be a sustainable path forward.

"Obama at least has gotten the Iran deal and has opened up to Cuba..."

Yes. What a terrible loss for human rights and world stability... Obama cemented his failure with these moves.

Earth to Blueray, is anybody home?? Just a reminder obama is still in office and he has been for these last 7 years and obama has 11 more months to go. So any and every blame goes in obamas lap!

The "misadventure in Libya" was part of Obama's support of "Arab Spring," which led to civil war and backlash repression throughout the Arab world. Tunisia teeters in the balance as the only place Arab Spring might leave lasting positive change. On the other hand, a calamity of colossal proportions engulfs Syria and Libya, that were both stable and peaceful dictatorships before--clearly the far lesser evil compared with the genocidal horrors and mass refugee migrations that are going on and seem destined to continue. The rise of ISIS is the most conspicuous spillover of this awful policy blunder, with wannabe Boko Haram atrocities echoing ISIS across a broad swath of Africa. Obama's biggest foreign policy achievement will be: making George W. Bush look competent! I wouldn't have thought it possible.
