But many of its Southeast Asian neighbours have overlapping claims, and tensions have risen over China's construction of artificial reefs in the disputed waters.

On Monday, China's defence ministry gave its first confirmation that Beijing had landed a military flight on the Fiery Cross reef in the Spratlys archipelago, also claimed by the Philippines.

On the day of Carter's trip, Beijing said that one of its top military officials had visited a South China Sea island.

Oh no, si-re. It can hit London in 45 minutes, so we better go to war with China (why do we never hear about British or American nuclear weapons being able to hit China.. or Russia). So far in history, only one nation has used nuclear weapons in war. And it was neither China... nor Russia.[CN]

Why do you think we haven't had any contact from intelligent life forms? it's because they've hit the ceiling underwhich self destruction is one option of the many inevitabilities. We are also heading in that direction, our path is set and clear. It's written in our DNA. Even though we know there will be no winners are still going to take the steps and ultimately annihilate each other[CN]

It's not just you. The United States Empire is fading. It's dying. It's on it's last breath, but unfortunately an Empire rarely admits it's time is over. Instead it becomes more and more aggressive towards rising Empires. Regrettably we live in a nuclear age, so there's a decent risk, the United States will end up in a nuclear war with China and Russia.[CN]

Yes, the West created the threat... In its trendy rush to "outsource" goods to cheaper countries, it created an unexpected problem... And when China teams up with Russia to create the world's biggest military force -- some time in the next 20 to 50 years -- the planet will become a much scarier place.[CN]

LVG69: The poster "me" did not mention the UK: I rather think the reference was to the USA: Who have invested billions in China....Just as they did after WW2 in Germany & Japan. You need to ask yourself: "Why?" I believe it is because the USA simply want to maintain the status quo with Russia...just as they did back then. War: Cold or otherwise, is good business for the big corporations. And their ever increasingly greedy shareholders. None of whom serve & die in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq.....etc etc....But who prey on the patriotism of decent, hardworking Americans nationwide. Decade after decade.

Remember when China and Japan used to send observers to see how our car plants and steel works functioned - and were eventually caught out copying plans etc - that they were able to to use as a basis for their own manufacturing processes - but without the investment in research and start-ups that we'd had to do.... ?? Well nowadays the West TELLS them what parts or finished jobs we want so they don't need to steal it, we give them the details !! Every technology the West has designed is being made for their customers - but made by China, so every advance is known to them, we have handed knowledge and superiority to them on a plate...... .

What you stated is applicable to China. However, in terms of technical advancement, Japan is far ahead of the west. Look at their bullet trains, punctual to the minute and look at the HS2.
