Good work, but not exactly heroic.

By that definition, no one saving lives or taking avoidance action is heroic - they're just doing their job - would you agree with that statement ?

In this situation yes. If someone driving a bus swerved to avoid a collision you wouldn't call it heroic.

Why a reward for just doing your job?

Not to diminish his skill, but that sort of seems like a no brainer to me. He had already been moving along in take off mode it just became a bit more urgent.

you sound like those NTSB guys in the movie Sully.

Newsaddict, it makes sense when you're able to sit back and think about it rationally, but when confronted with a situation like that where there are literally seconds to make the right decision, experience has shown than pilots don't always get it right. The manoeuvre was, theoretically, relatively simple -- apply full power and pull up sharply -- but having the presence of mind to execute the manoeuvre and to execute it safely was certainly very skilful. Excellent piloting on the captain's part.

First - it's a simulation not a video. Second, the A320 was well into its takeoff run meaning that it was already producing full power and couldn't therefore suddenly 'accelerate'. Third - where did 62ft clearance come from. That's the height of a four-storey building! No story here - move along please.

Comment within your competence! Short field take off with flap! and he would have had full power initially until he realized the obstacle! If you like flying so much may I suggest you go enroll in flight school and then you will get your facts right in future!

Sorry no name. I am a pilot. You don't do 'short field takeoffs' with an airliner! "Bang the flaps down???" Back to your Biggles book sonny.

@Rightstuffer!!! I am a pilot too. Are you kidding! is this some sort of joke!, oh LOL, SONNY I dont know what airline you work for but you sure as daylight do not fly any sort of plane. May I suggest you go check out the POH for a 320 on short field take offs!

Red Arrow away, but if you watch the video, the pilot does a great job of moving the plane and the passengers on HIS jet out of danger fair enough, however the other plane luckily took off when it did otherwise it would have hit the vertical stabiliser and there would of been an accident and injured the people on the plane taking decent. BOTH pilots should have been rewarded especially as it is the plane taking off that really prevented an accident! Very very close call that could of ended badly.

Read the headline it says the pilot who steered his plane out of the way, more dm articles not being clear!

Did either pilot have valid runway tax, MOT, insurance, and flying test?

Just one question... how was this filmed, from a plane fly directly above another plane taking off?

SimonBReply toJohn B
Just one answer...it was a video simulation.

Shouldn't they have just fired the air traffic control who caused this? Great job to the pilot, but honestly he was just doing this job - not sure why the rest of the crew, let alone him got huge bonuses? In that case can doctors and nurses get bonuses when we save lives that were cause by others mistakes?

Both the ATCs involved have had their ATC licences cancelled for life.

Well, i wouldn't say this is heroic in comparison to Hudson incident. Mainly because 120 mph is around 125 knots, which is the speed of v1 rotate on the a320. so technically the pilot did what he was meant to do and lift the aircraft (and accelerate) cause no way you will break and stop the aircraft in time but I am still semi-impressed as it could have been KLM number 2

thechosenoneReply toAlex Lenny Xu
If you used this as a definition for heroism then all pilots who save lives (or at the last avoid crashes) are not heroic - because that's what they're paid/expected to do

V2 is take-off speed, V1 means you can't stop before you run out of runway

You already ran this story on 13th October. Need something to fill all that white space? Sophie Williams, "a DM journalist" gave a good head to have her story run again?

"....steering his plane out of danger is awarded £360k... " Exactly how did he 'steer' his plane out of danger?

A hero is someone who puts there own life in danger to save others, I'd hardly call him a hero he did what anyone should or would have.

Anyone? Well let's see you at the controls then. He deserves every yuan of that reward.

He also deserves the reqrds given to the cabin crew - What on earth did they do to avoid the crash? The passengers surely have just as much right to it!

What else would he or could he have done? I am always amused when reading stories of pilots steering away from towns/villages/ miscellaneous objects as acts of heroism. Its human nature to take avoiding action.
