A Chinese airline rewarded one of its pilots with three million yuan (£360,000) today for preventing a collision between two planes that could have killed 439 people.[CN]

The pilot's Airbus A320 was about to take off from an airport in Shanghai last month when it encountered an Airbus A330 in its path along the runway, reports the People's Daily Online. 

The pilot, named He Chao, chose to accelerate and fly over the other aircraft avoiding a head-on crash by just 19 metres (62 feet).

The terrifying incident took place on runway 36L at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport at 12:04pm on October 11.

The flight MU-5643, an Airbus A320-200, was about to take off when the flight MU 5106, an Airbus A330-300, had just landed and was taxiing nearby.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) released a simulation of the incident during their investigation last month.

The video shows the A320 was speeding up on the runway when Mr He spotted the A330 entering its runway just feet away.   

At the time, the Airbus A320 was already travelling at approximately 240kmh (149mph), according to a statement on China Eastern Airlines' website.

Mr He decided to accelerated and made a sharp climb. His aircraft narrowly missed the other plane.  

The near-miss incident has shocked the Chinese media. Many have compared it to the Tenerife airport disaster, a fatal runway crash between two Boeing 747s that killed 583 people in 1977.

China Eastern Airlines rewarded the quick-thinking pilot He Chao with the cash bonus during a ceremony earlier today. The cabin crew were also given 600,000 yuan (£71,000).

According to an earlier article from People's Daily, there were 413 passengers and 26 crew in total on the two flights.

Both aircraft involved in the near collision belong to China Eastern Airlines. 

The Airbus A330 had flown from Beijing to Shanghai, carrying 266 passengers, while the Airbus A320 was taking off from Shanghai for Tianjin, carrying 147 passengers. 

An investigation launched by China's aviation authority, CAAC, found that air traffic control were at fault for the incident.

CAAC suggested that the control centre and the crew members of the A330 failed to maintain proper communication with the controller.

The authority has revoked the licenses of two air traffic controllers responsible for the incident and punished 13 air traffic control officials from The Eastern China Air Control Bureau.

Teddy, by that reasoning every pilot who has ever saved his passengers from disaster wasn't a hero because he was saving his own skin, too. Pilots take the safety of their passengers extremely seriously. That aside, you can't eject yourself from the cockpit after having saved the passengers -- it's one in, all in; if you save the passengers, you save yourself, too.[CN]

Pilots don't generally take off with another aircraft on the runway, vanishingpoint. Nor do pilots usually apply maximum thrust on a take-off roll. It's not the fact that he got the plane into the air that he is being praised for; it's the fact that he correctly assessed the dangerous situation and responded properly. The captain may well have panicked and closed the throttles and braked hard to try and stop or he might have veered the aircraft off the runway. Or he may not have thought to advance the throttles. Human beings don't always react well in abnormal or emergency situations. This pilot did and thanks to him 439 people are still alive today. He deserves all the rewards that he gets.[CN]

Vanishingpoint, when you and most other pilots take off there is usually no plane on the runway in your path. Nor do pilots usually apply max thrust for a routine take off roll. The pilot is being rewarded for having quickly assessed a very dangerous situation and having responded correctly. He may well have panicked, closed the throttles and tried to stop the aircraft or he might have veered the aircraft off the side of the runway to avoid the A330. He might not have even thought to advance the throttles. Humans don't always react well is abnormal or emergency situations, often making seemingly irrational decisions; this pilot reacted commendably and deserves all the praise/reward he gets.[CN]

Vanishingpoint. When you have the leisurely time to sit around and think about it, then I suppose it might not appear to be anything impressive. When you are travelling at 150 mph in an unstoppable bullet, then yes, it begins to become more impressive the longer you think about it. Planes, like trains and 18-wheel trucks, do not "stop on a dime," Not even close, no matter how hard you apply the brakes, and ESPECIALLY at 150 mph. He had seconds to assess the situation, make a decision, and execute said decisions. That is impressive no matter the situation, but more so with more than 200 lives on the line,[CN]

So gunning the throttle towards another plane blocking the runway is better than hitting the very effective reverse thrust (ie brake) and steering onto the grass???? This was a gung-ho reaction that thankfully didn't cost many lives. To reward it is madness. Anyway, tomorrow on my way to work I'm going to accelerate towards the first red light. If I don't kill anyone I fully expect a massive cheque and hero status.[CN]

The aircraft was almost at V1 and could not stop within the short distance. If you've ever been on a plane, you'd know that thrust reversers take a while to stop a plane and there would have been a collision if he hadnt taken off early.

GK, he was already travelling at about 129 kts, probably past V1. That may have been to fast to safely stop and veering a plane off the runway at high speed is very dangerous.

Alex, the NTSB most assuredly did no such thing. Their job was to investigate the crash, which included assessing the pilots' actions. They were very, very, very clear (couldn't be clearer) that they did not contibute negatively. It's incredibly important that this is done so as to give instructions to other pilots and avoid a tragic outcome in the future. Hollywood films are poor substitutes for actual reportage and you look very f o o l ish for swallowing whatever dramatic nonsense they feed you.

Watching the simulation it is clear that his action made no difference, the other plane had already cleared it. In fact the pilot made it worse as he moved the vertical stabiliser, the highest point on the plane, right into the path of the oncoming plane. Just saying.

No, it was actually from a camera mounted on a large tower, on the runway. The pilot had to swerve to avoid the tower and camera and then swerve to avoid the plane.

Good job, but 'heroic'? Whatever he did he would be the first in line to arrive at the potential accident scene. If he's already on a takeoff run there's not much room to 'chose to accelerate', he's most likely already at full throttle. Finally, you can't just accelerate/brake a plane however you want, his options are limited by what speed he's already at.
