Walruses live mostly in shallow waters above the continental shelves, spending much of their time on sea ice looking for benthic bivalve mollusks to eat

Walruses make their way to the shore from the Bering Strait in the stunning photos taken by Mike Korostelev
These breathtaking photos show an incredible gathering of walrus piled on top of each other on a shore facing Alaska.
The sight of walrus at Chukotka is a phenomenon that has accompanied the loss of sea ice as the climate has warned.
Unlike seals, walruses cannot swim indefinitely and must rest. They use their tusks to pull themselves onto ice or rocks.
A
number of the walruses separated from the pack were pictured reclining
on their front or slumbering on their back while splayed out on the
pebbly beach front.
The spectacular images were taken by wildlife photographer Mike Korostelev, 34, on the Cape Vankarem.
'Every year walruses swim here and they come close to humans', he said.
'I came across a lone walrus who was sleeping on the shore, so I crept up to it and photographed it with a wide-angle lens.'
He added: 'I was very careful not to disturb the walruses. Through my work, I would like to show people that seeing animals in nature is much more interesting than going to the zoo.
'I want to show what an incredible world we have and how it can only be saved for future generations if we all work together.'
Walruses are bulky beasts, weighing up to two tonnes, with tusks that can grow to 80cm (30in) in length.
They split into sub-herds which divide the males and females when they are not mating.
To mark their dominance, males use their tusks and bodies in a mark of aggression.
They spend a lot of their time in shallow waters and on the beach front where they congregate in large groups.
If the plural of hippopotamus is hippopotami shouldn't more than one walrus be walri? But then, what do I know? I also think two voles are vile.[CN]
They all look so comfy. My daughter has a sectional couch that runs 12' in one direction with an extension out one end, then the next section runs 8' with an enormous foot stool in the middle. Her house is where my grandkids and friends congregate and on Saturday morning, the couch is covered with kids laying in all directions, feet and heads up and down, all packed together, sleeping like these walruses.[CN]
Seeing the beach scenes of all those Walruses on that Russian Beach, reminds of the Holiday we had in Hurghada Egypt 5 years ago, where the Russians were hogging every available space, especially the sun beds.....The Russians are the "New Germans". The funny part of it all, was the Germans and us Brits were all ganging up and moaning about the Ruskies....;-))[CN]
@Scotty Green, Aberdeen,.................Well, you lot should know about hogging, and wanting it all for yourselves to the detriment of the rest of the UK......past and present masters at it!![CN]
@Scotty Green, Aberdeen...
I was on a beach like this in Namibia, with sea lions. Maybe 100,000 of them during mating season. Beautiful sight, but ahrggg! The smell! 100K one-ton mammals eating fish and, well.... eliminating. Think 100% pure ammonia smell.[CN]
