Many of the customers want a special design on their horse before bringing the animal to a competition

A horse clipper has become a UK sensation after trimming complex medieval designs into the animals for her clients.

These amazing images show the detailed designs created by artist Melody Hamer, 27.

She began clipping her own pet pony at the age of 12, after it suffered from a condition called cushings, causing it to have a thick woolly coat which doesn't change in the warmer season.

As she gained more experience, in 2013, she eventually set up her own clipping company, JMC Equestrian, based in Lancashire.

Previously she had simply trimmed the coats with standard looks such as a blanket or bib, but after getting quirky requests from clients, she became more artistic with her designs.

Her work has now become a sensation on the equestrian circuit as she prepares animals for riding events.

One of her most complex designs was clipping a medieval armour design onto the coat of Romeo, her own horse and another was decorated with ancient castle motifs.

Explaining how she decides patterns, she said: 'Often I will visualise it in my head and clarify it with a quick look at related objects which in turn can create new ideas and viewpoints.

'I sketched out different shapes for castles and also for the armour clip as I knew I wanted a specific kind of style castle and sword.

'This helps me visualise in my head and I run with it from there.

'I use a wide range of blades and clippers, I have blades and clippers to suit pretty much every situation, and ever breed as well as coat type.

'No stencils have been used to date or CGI's here - all hand crafted, it's very much like a craft to me that only comes with experience and practice.

The designs, some which she draws freehand, can take anything from 30 minutes up to eight or nine hours spread over a few sessions and her castle design is the one she is most proud of.

She continued: 'I would work for as long as it took though, over the space of days, to suit the horse.

'The castle is important to me as it kick started the larger scale custom clipping and gave me something to really work at. It got me a lot of attention.

'This season my favourite has been the Armour De L'Amore clip as it's on my personal horse Romeo and I have worked over time to build him up.

'Now he stands unaltered with compete trust while I work which has been a challenge as he's was a very nervous character and still is but he trusts me and it's a great feeling.

'Usually the owner of the horse will have some idea of something they would like, for example a bumble bee for one client.

'Or chains for another commission for a client who wanted shackles so we did this.

'Hearts and stars are always very popular. I enjoy requests as each on is a new challenge and it teaches me new techniques.

'Each is almost like problem solving, you have to tailor to the horse that is stood in front of you too - coat types and the horse's tolerance has to be taken into consideration also.

'I am interested in medieval, regal and military aspects so that's how the armour and castle clips materialised '

If they are working horses they can overheat in summer if they are not clipped.[CN]

John Preston - How did horses manage with the heat before the invention of clippers? Does it have something to do with the fact that most animals with hair/fur will shed their winters coats in preparation for the summer heat?[CN]

John Preston -

@Flzz0527 I totally agree... I hate how people justify doing all sorts of things to animals ... "because they'll suffer without human intervention", as though no animal can live by itself. Deluded.[CN]

FLzz and bushmaster, most animals can live without human intervention, but ones we've domesticated for thousands of years tend to require a bit of extra care.[CN]

They are clipped in the winter, not summer. Some horses have very thick coats, and get itchy and sore with their thick coats, especially if they get sweaty. The coat can be clipped off and the horse wears "rugs" for warmth instead. Don't be fooled into thinking horses in the wild live care free - they can suffer from dreadful conditions that people pay a lot of money to protect domesticated horses from. Owning a horse is not like owning a dog. It takes a lot of hard work and knowledge.[CN]

Well you have to admit it is different and as they are clipped I can't see why anyone would complain, horses are often clipped and I doubt they mind whether it is a normal clip or a fancy one. All it needs is a horse with the patience to allow it to be done.[CN]

Well I'm complaining because it hurts my eyes. They're completely disfigured. What's next? Cats and dogs having silly images clipped into their hair? Oh wait... just google "animal haircuts craze". Then come back and tell me you think the stegosaurus cat was a good idea.[CN]

Very good work, impressed by her free hand skill, it not easy clipping an animal as they tend to move at the most Inopportune moments. As such, some of the designs would benefit from the use of a stencil as this would ensure uniformity on areas that need it such as the chequer boards to make it really pop. There is no shame in the use of stencils, especially if you designed and cut them yourself.[CN]
