Reports say the lesson was at the City College of the Dongguan University of Technology.

The college decided that Mr Jiang's actions were out of order and made him compensate for the girl's loss.

But on social media the professor's methods sparked debate, reports news channel CCTV News.

On Weibo @Qiaoyue-G wrote: 'Although the student was wrong playing on her mobile in class, it's not right that the teacher threatened to fail her. Mobile phone is a student's personal property. The teacher should have educated her in a right way.'[CN]

Another took the student's side: 'Would the student have played on her mobile phone had she enjoyed your class? And isn't it a waste of resources smashing the phone?'[CN]

But @Teamoyzd argued: 'I think if a teacher sets the rules and the consequences of violating them, the students should be responsible to bear the punishment, no matter how severe it is.'[CN]
