Prince's Death Investigation Has Taken a Grim Turn

week, as investigators look into Prince’s tragic death at the age of
57, new details have emerged that appear to paint a tragic picture. Two
days ago, investigators told the media
that they are focusing on the role that painkillers might have played
in the musician’s death. This news came shortly after a TMZ report
claimed that Prince’s emergency landing days before his death was caused
by a drug overdose. Today, the county sheriff investigating the death has asked for help from the Drug Enforcement Administration, as prescription painkillers were found in Prince’s possession when he died.[CN]
According to NBC News,
the DEA’s role “will be to determine such things as where the
medications came from, and what prescriptions Prince had obtained. DEA
agents often check those records in death investigations.”[CN]
An
autopsy was conducted last week, but the medical examiner said it will
take weeks for the cause of death to be confirmed, and officials have
not said what role the painkillers played in Prince’s collapse in his
Minneapolis house.
This week, Michael Padden, an attorney for Prince’s siblings told the Star Tribune
that Prince had “substantial” problems with opioid painkiller Percocet
and cocaine for at least a decade. Meanwhile, the past week has been filled with touching tributes to the late musician, including a powerful performance by D'Angelo on The Tonight Show.
Personally who cares he died you don't see this kind of money being spent on a homeless person when they die. Or when a soldier is killed why do we even care? He's dead yes it is sad yes I know he has a family. Yes I will be criticized but we have people that die everyday and you don't see huge articles on them. So next time a soldier dies defending our great country I hope to see news feeds flooded with out pour for the service they provided.[CN]

There is so much help out there for those struggling with addictions, prescription or otherwise and maybe this will be a sign to those to get the help they need before it is too late.[CN]

Do what I did... Got drunk in early May 2011 ... decided it was a good time for me to clean my 9mm, shot my middle finger off (don't ask me how, I was in a blackout). That was a wakeup call from Father and in a few days I'll be sober for 5 years, with no plans to get drunk again.[CN]
Catherine is correct. Even with insurance, the insurance companies step you down after two weeks, usually. This is like giving a cancer patient 1 or 2 chemo treatments. Then, they encourage intensive outpatient counseling, where all the newly released addicts are champing at the bit to get high. Then, they charge you for whatever the insurance didn't cover, and won't let you back in when you inevitably relapse, until you cough up hundreds of dollars. Maybe this isn't the case in other states, but it sure is in Arizona. Plus a woeful lack of facilities...unless you are rich. It is a never-ending revolving door of pure BS and money. I know, my daughter is an addict and will most likely die. Yes, if you can get clean the first time (hah) in rehab, it works. That is almost never the case.[CN]
His addiction is none of my business, may he rest in peace and I'm positively sure he wouldn't care for all of this attention into his personal lifestyle being the private guy that he was. I don't like the news.[CN]
The "Grim turn" story is no news; it is already been said he was on pain killers for a hip pain that needed hip replacement . And we also know that the toxicology will take months before result comes up. So tell us something that we don't know. Besides ;every addition starts with a prescribed pain killers that gradually increase in strength to the point the artist becomes dependent on the " make an addict and grab money system. So pls tell us something new.[CN]
The problem is that some people think that if a little of a medication is good, then a lot is better. In the case of pain-killers, this may lead to taking enough to stop the pain, permanently. I take hyrdocodone for the same purpose. I would never consider mixing it with something illegal, and take only 1/3 the recommended dose prescribed, and that not every day. After 13 years, it is still effective, and I need less, not more, to achieve the desired pain reduction. It is the difference between an addictive personality, and a non-addictive personality.[CN]
I just saw a commercial on t.v where it said nexuim the med for heart burn can kill you now, so is nothing safe to take these days but that don't stop pharma's from pushing them. R.I.P sweet Prince no judgement here, love you anyway.
While I am not a fanatic fan of his, how about we all just wait until the autopsy results are back and stop theorizing? It is sad that he is gone, but I am sure his family, friends and fans would dearly love to see this type of pokey guessing go away.
Taking opiods for pain is something that needs to be closely managed. As a chronic pain sufferer, I know that some days you just have to deal with a certain level of pain so that you do not become dependent on them. It is VERY difficult for someone who has to go through the physical endurance of a performer.
I give Prince a pass on the opiods, but the cocaine is inexcusable. Other posts are correct. No human is invincible.
I agree. I am a sufferer as well. The difference is Prince took them for pain, as we do, while an addict takes them for the feeling they get from them. What people don't know is that when you're in pain, you don't get any type of "high" feelings from them. Just some relief. So there IS a difference between taking it as medicine and being an addict. Just my opinion.

Yup, but anyone daring in these comments to raise questions about either Prince's or Justice Scalia's supposed "natural deaths" got nothing but thumbs down. Apparently people are set on believing that they were "just taken by God to be sent to some eternal paradise" or other #$%$. If you reall think that there was no foul play involved in these deaths, well, dream on ...
Prince's body was promptly cremated before many questions could be asked, and medical coroners were not allowed near Scalia's body which was quickly buried without autopsy despite the circumspect circumstances. Yeah, that's all dead normal ...
Not sure if this is grimm really: it just shows that even the rich often have to resort to doctor shopping because of the onerous DEA drug war keeping them in pain.
I thought he became a Jehovah's Witness? I don't know enough about JW's, but Prince had a hip surgery, and was taking pills. Isn't that a no-no in that religion? IDK - just wondering......
I knew that about the blood. But I thought there were other medically related things they didn't do. There was an individual in my spouses family, not blood related, that was a JW, and wouldn't even take medications.
I don't think Prince was 'abusing' pain pills if he was in pain: I think the US's war on drugs is forcing peeps in pain to have to go thru such measures in order to find relief. That said he had the the money to employ a Doc with narcan to follow him around, but maybe post Mike Jackson there are fewer doc's willing to work as 'milk of amnesia' like specialists?

No idea how so many ppl who obviously knew how much he was spending on pain killers "which he was obviously abusing" can be interviewed on tv and make statements like " i was shocked when i heard the news" besides being flat out ignorant. I can understand his ppl keeping quiet because they are all interested in one thing, the money trail while he was alive. Its like dousing ones self in gasoline, and then lighting a lighter, and then reacting as if you had no idea what the end results would be. Its called denial ppl. And in the end result, all i see in the media are stories about where his money is going, to who, how much, and why. It isn't anyone's business who he left to , why, or how much.
Totally agree. His own cook must have seen something. His body guard(s), chauffeurs, staff. It is technically impossible to hide from all those living with you. Money shut them up. Very soon, each will come out for the tabloids. It's almost conspiratorial (figuratively), they were silenced in favor of their paychecks, and now they come out for an opportunity of a life time.
If your boss were doping, what would you do? Seriously, what path would you take? We don't know whether people in Prince's life said nothing. He was a solitary fellow. His staff might have indeed warned him, as might his friends. But what could they do? Quit loving him? Quit making him healthy meals? Quit cleaning his house or driving him around? His staff and friends were not cops or social workers. Prince was in control of his own actions. For a true addict, there isn't much one can do, especially if the addict is protected by a lot of money and solitude.
Yes, its still all speculation, which many Citizen's, here in The Good Ole U.S of A. in 2016 to date, are Oh! so very, very good at actively doing no doubt at all, too!
To add to plotter's comment, If one has a loved one who is receiving narcotics from a legitimate doctor for what was once a legitimate medical issue and the patient is now hooked on and abusing the medications it becomes impossible to help. Even if a family member informs the doctor about the abuse/misuse if the patient can convince the doctor the drugs are needed the Rx drug supply continues. When family members confront the drug user they are accused of wanting the patient to suffer from pain because no doctor would prescribe a drug that wasn't needed.
I live in Mpls and have a family member who has been prescribed narcotics for years for a litany of chronic pain issues. I've given up hoping any doctor will be honest and confront this family member. I've informed them of the misuse. They've seen this person in a slurred, out of it state.
Yet because this person is able to put on an act, complete with wearing knee braces, using a cane or wheeling into the office in a wheelchair claiming the pain has never been this bad the Rx's just keep a coming.
I've often wished the doctor would peek out the window and watch this same person, who just seconds ago claimed to be in so much pain they could barely walk or speak toss the wheelchair into the trunk or the cane in the back seat, hop in the car and drive off. Then walk into their apartment or Perkins for dinner without the cane or the wheelchair and enjoy dinner with coherent conversation.
My wonderful friend who passed away at the age of 87 once said to me, "I'm in so much pain, if one more person says I look good, I will punch them in the face!" (She was the sweetest person and would not have. She didn't even learn to use curse words until she was a ripe old 75. LOL What a great summer that was.)
She had such terrible osteoporosis which did eventually become obvious. The doctor couldn't put any supports in back because the bones, when he tried, crumbled at his touch. This was still about 15 years before she died. She knew I understood her suffering. Pain is not always visible. You can't tell how much or how little anyone else has.
Might the beginning of use of paint killers match the beginning of an intolerably painful medical condition? maybe no good choices, just pain that makes you wish your are dead vs. a painkiller that makes life tolerable but comes with the risk of addiction/death?
Turn on the television and count the number of commercials pushing some kind of pill. "Everything you think, do and say is in the pill you took today."
I mean, the fact that he was worth more dead, than live, due to his massive, yet unreleased music collection, which he kept FOR IMSELF, unwilling to release, and play into the ands of the huge record industry???
People who have something wrong with bones or joints are in tremendous pain, and surgery often DOES NOT HEAL IT. There are so many people in the world o pain meds of some sort, that they are now creating other drugs to aid with the side effects of those drugs, such as constipation.
Taken AS PRESCRIBED, they can allow people to function.
I think there is a large number of people that for some reason want to get more control over the health care of other people, and track what medications they use for some other, unrelated reason There is work ongoing right now on chips and trackers which would be on both the pills and inside the patient which would monitor the usage.
Not a conspiracy nut, just paying attention to what is happening in the world today.
And oftentimes surgery can make the pain much worse. My 1st massively botched spine fusion is a good example. And then there's the scar tissue that wraps around nerve roots and organs that causes even more pain.
Oh, I feel for you, I really do. I know other people who are in bad shape, with back problems as well. Back pain is one of the number one problems in the US.

I have often said that I wish I had never had it!
I don't take anything, but "tolerate" the pain, use ice, (well, I do take over the counter anti inflamatories sometimes), do the rubs with lidocaine, and aspirin them, etc. I have ugly scars, now, too, on my legs.
I am limited in what activities I can do. And, as one part of us is connected to another, I find it has cause other part of my body to give me trouble, now.
The thing was, when I opted for the surgical route, that I was afraid it would get even worse, and so, who really knows?
I read once about a man who took his own life, and he had undergone the surgery I had.
I don't understand why the Walgren's pharmacy staff kept filling so many prescriptions in the same week for Prince (who reportedly made 4 trips there the week he died). I'm surprised that Prince wasn't referred back to his primary physician who in turn could refer him to a specialist in pain management --- especially with all of his financial resources. Bizarre. Also, after having supposedly OD'ing 6 days before his actual death, you would think that family, friends and/or band members wouldn't have left him alone for at least the first 2 weeks just to monitor or assist Prince until he fully recovered. Once again, the Almighty dollar wins the race. Let one of us need 4 Percocet prescriptions in one week, we'd be stopped by the 2nd request. Smh...
