They obviously held the contents in high regard, but that doesn't mean they were revering what they thought they were revering. Buddha lived and died an awfully long time before this was created. Longer than the time between the life of Christ and the time the Shroud of Turin showed up.

The Buddha's ashes were found in Piprahwa Stupa in 1898.

Oh yes, why don't we just DNA test it... Only problem is we don't have the original Buddha DNA... No way to prove it

Please allow me to say here, because of the comments of at least one clo d, that the statues of that fat bloke, are not depictions of The Buddha. He is some Chinese monk or god I'm really not sure which, but I am sure its not the Enlightened One.

Well, in Buddhism, there are plenty of Buddhas. Buddha means enlightened one. Anyone can be a Buddha. The big fat one is the Laughing Buddha. Generally, when someone talks about 'Buddha', they mean Siddharta Gautama, the founder of Buddhism.

The third picture from the top is quite interesting, it's a list to thank all the donors who donated money to make this chest, it lists all the donors' name and the amount of money they donated, according to this, the chest only cost them 121 liang silver, 'liang' is an ancient Chinese unit of weight, 1 liang is about 37 gram, so in today's currency, the chest only costs about 3000 dollars, but silver was much more expensive in ancient China than today, so it would have cost them like ten times more.

Beautiful craftsmanship on the casket.

I just don't believe true Buddhists would have put his ashes in an expensive beautiful ornate gold box. Believers are not obsessed with material wealth or ornamentation. It's like that whole scene in the Indiana Jones and the Last Crude with the holy grail.

The Buddha died nearly 3000 years ago. So somebody must have put then remains into this box 2000 years after his death.
