this is far from a wonderful thing. just a reminder that a few cosmetic issue mean you are shunned and laughed at by societyAndypinchiReply toAndypinchi
because the social attitude and bullying towards her appearance is wrong. it's saying if you look different you'll be shunned. so now she doesn't look different she won't be shunned... is that not fitting in with the masses who bullied her? why will she be happier now? because bad people won't laugh at her personally? it's not a wonderful thing for them to not laugh at her, as they will only do it because she now looks good, which is not a wonderful thing. having these people not shun her due to society changing would be wonderful, her getting surgery to fit in is in no way a bad thing from her, but it is just to fit in with the whole crowd of bullies so not wonderfulmacaroon35
To those saying this is real 'corrective' surgery, you are utterly ignorant. There is no difference in the effect on self confidence and mental health in breast augmentation or maxillo-facial surgery such as this. She could eat, drink and talk. This is cosmetic surgery & I for one am grateful we have the NHS to provide this service for her and those like her.SurreywifeReply tomacaroon35
Massive over bites have other problems. Teeth wear away at the opposite jaw, reducing bones, loosening teeth which will ultimately fall out. Because of the overbite, false teeth would not be a viable solution as they are not strong enough to withstand the jaw strength. I know because I had this problem. It's a frightening decision to make, but I'm glad I went ahead.SurreywifeReply tomacaroon35
I wonder why someone would dislike my comment!?! How strange. I think it's fantastic that this young lady has had the work done as she obviously needed it not just for appearance but eating, dental longevity etc. If like me, she had to dislocate her jaw each time she tried to eat, she also will have damaged jaw sockets and it can be very painful, not to say embarrassing when your jaw clicks so loudly, people turn around. And to have teeth you can move around with your tongue! Still, each to their own.P ArmstrongReply toLouise
Get real. The surgeons have done a fantastic job and she buckled down and bravely coped with the surgery and the recovery. The result is that her quality of life has been transformed.Sometimes the right thing to do,is to refuse to just accept the hand that you're dealt. Good on her I say!ScarletReply toLouise
Yes, she actually was. The doctor termed it a congenital deformity. She had the jaw of an 8 yr old as a teenager, it had stopped growing completely, and thus her permanent teeth were desperately overcrowded. Mine were not as bad as hers as my jaw did keep growing, but I did have all my permanent teeth by age 8 and had fangs that wouldn't come down and some teeth that overlapped. I got braces aged 10 and that was corrected, but it took 6 yrs of orthodontia to accomplish it. You might term mine as a congenital deformity as well, because it is very unusual for a child to lose all their baby teeth by age 8. Her jaw was indeed deformed as it had stopped growing by that age.Uniicorn
The fact that someone has to have surgery to feel normal says more about the society we live in than it does her. Im happy for her, but she was always beautiful.nickmfd
Who writes this drivel She has had orthodontic treatment (braces) and then a bi-maxillary osteotomy to correct her jaw deformity VERY routine surgery actually nothing "pioneering" about itLooking at the X-rays she has had a maxillary impaction at Lefort 1 level and a forward sliding sagittal split with an advancement genioplasty Op duration about 3 hours and all procedures that have been in use for the last 30 years or more!!bigged
Fantastic. But not "pioneering" surgery I'm afraid. My son had this done in Sweden two years ago. The surgeon was brilliant and he does four per week. Bad research again DM.Poormanphysics
She maybe ok aesthetically speaking but it does not change her genetic make up she could pass the same features to her children someday hopefully not if the features of the would be husband would dominate of course.pietschka liika
My son had this very same operation done 20 years ago by a swedish dental surgeon trained in the U.S. This procedure has been around for quite a long time. I wish DM would do a little research. My son had his maxilla (upper jaw) fractured in 2 places, same for mandible(lower jaw). Then he had his TMJ joint broken on each side so his lower jaw could be put in occlusion with his upper jaw. He has titanium plates, nuts and bolts and wires to retain these positions until new bone growth will eventually solidify all of the fractures. He wears a retainer bar for his lower teeth so they do not shift when he chews. It would be nice if DM wasn't so jingoistic
