Siberian tiger is a class-one protected animal species in China. [CN]
A spokesman from the zoo said the tigress was an offspring of one of the tigers that attacked her.
However, it does not seem the young animal had been killed due to the animals' protection towards their territory.
Liu Chang, the assistant to the director of the zoo, said the dead tigress had shared an enclosure with the others tigers peacefully for two years.
There were nine tigers in total in the enclosure. All the tigers were outdoor except for one, which was waiting to give birth.
Liu added: 'It's possible that she bled while playing with other tigers. Siberian tigers could turn aggressive at the smell of blood.'
The zoo authority said the tigress died of suffocation after being bitten in the neck.
Tourists who witnessed the attack apparently thought the zoo's poor management was to blame.
One of the onlookers can be heard saying in the background of the video: 'There should be zoo staff on duty. It's a protected species.'
Another one shouted: 'It made me so mad!'
Siberian tigers were once found throughout the Russian Far East, northern China and the Korean peninsula.
The animals, also known as the Amur tiger, were driven to the brink of extinction by 1940s due to hunting.
It was classified as 'endangered' by The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, making it more precious than the giant pandas, which were downgraded to 'vulnerable' this week.
The population of the species is now estimated at 360.
Get over it. That tiger was dead before the others decided it looked tasty.[CN]
BS, not in a zoo. That situation was completely the responsibility of humans to control the habitat and as typical, esp. in China, they failed miserably. This would very likely not have happened in the wild.[CN]
The only thing more despicable than the lack of care given by this zoo is the DM's long standing anti-hunting sentiment. They weren't "hunted" to near extinction, they were "poached". There is a difference and any mediocre journalist knows it.[CN]
This is horrifically sad! This could have been a preventable event...to close of environment and way to many so called kings of the kingdom...I did not watch the video the thought of this makes my heart hurt! Rest in peace girl...[CN]
