The two-year-old animal was attacked by seven to eight tigers, yesterday afternoon at a zoo in north-east China's Changchun city, reported People's Daily Online.[CN]

人民日报网报，昨天下午在中国东北的长春市，年轻雌虎被7-8头老虎围攻。

Video of the horrifying incident was filmed by stunned onlookers before being widely shared on social media.[CN]

震惊不已的路人拍下这个惊悚事件的视频，之后这视频在社交媒体广泛传播。

The footage lasts two and a half minutes and was first uploaded by social media user 'micro life in Jilin' to Weibo, the Chinese equivalent to Twitter, on September 6. [CN]

小视频持续两分半钟，一开始是微博（相当于国外的推特）上“micro life in Jilin”社交媒体用户在9月6号上传的。

In the video, a woman could be heard saying: 'It looks like it has passed out.'[CN]

在视频中，可清晰的听见一名妇女叫道：“雌虎好像晕过去了。”

Then a man said: 'Dead, it's dead for sure. It was alive a while ago. [CN]

Along with the video, a post claimed that the incident took place in the Changchun Botanical and Zoological Garden at around 3pm that day.[CN]

关于这个视频，有另一条发表称，这次事件是下午大约三点在长春动植物园发生的。

It also claimed that the young tigress had been attacked by eight tigers because she entered their territory.[CN]

东北虎是中国的一级保护动物物种。

A spokesman from the zoo said the tigress was an offspring of one of the tigers that attacked her.

However, it does not seem the young animal had been killed due to the animals' protection towards their territory. 

Liu Chang, the assistant to the director of the zoo, said the dead tigress had shared an enclosure with the others tigers peacefully for two years.

There were nine tigers in total in the enclosure.  All the tigers were outdoor except for one, which was waiting to give birth.

Liu added: 'It's possible that she bled while playing with other tigers. Siberian tigers could turn aggressive at the smell of blood.'

The zoo authority said the tigress died of suffocation after being bitten in the neck.

Tourists who witnessed the attack apparently thought the zoo's poor management was to blame.

One of the onlookers can be heard saying in the background of the video: 'There should be zoo staff on duty. It's a protected species.'

Another one shouted: 'It made me so mad!' 

Siberian tigers were once found throughout the Russian Far East, northern China and the Korean peninsula. 

The animals, also known as the Amur tiger, were driven to the brink of extinction by 1940s due to hunting. 

It was classified as 'endangered' by The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, making it more precious than the giant pandas, which were downgraded to 'vulnerable' this week. 

The population of the species is now estimated at 360.
