With a clutch-driven lift fan,a rotatable, dilating, exhaust nozzle with reheat and several auxiliary airflow doors that all have to open perfectly every time this thing lands vertically, it's surely an accident waiting to happen. The number of moving parts involved in the lobster tail exhaust, clutch and powered doors is enormous - and they must all be checked and serviced regularly (at sea). If any one fails, it could mean the total loss of the aircraft and pilot. The lift scheme chosen seems to be innately complex. The old Harrier had four, simple, coupled effluxes that rotated in one plane and directed thrust from one engine. That kept the mechanical complexity down - but I fear the worst for the F-35's future service record.
