The Marine Corps is trying to figure out what caused the fire to ignite on an F-35B Joint Strike Fighter aircraft that took off from a base in Beaufort, South Carolina, last month, Military.com reported on Monday.[CN]

'The aircraft landed safely and there were no injuries sustained,' a Marine Corps spokesperson said.

'An investigation is ongoing and we will provide updates as they are available.'

The damage to the plane is estimated to run at least $2million, according to Military.com.

The Beaufort base is home to the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, a fleet consisting of 20 F-35B aircraft.

The Marines are preparing to deploy their first operational squadron of F-35B fighters in Japan beginning in January.

It is expected to be placed into circulation during the corps' flight sorties throughout the Pacific the following year.

The F-35 Lightning II stealth multirole fighter is the latest generation of warplanes manufactured by American defense contractor Lockheed Martin.

The F-35B models are capable of short take offs and vertical landings.

These new aircraft are being earmarked for the Marine Corps, which plans on introducing them into service and concurrently phasing out the F/A-18 Hornet and the AV-8B Harrier II.

The US military has experienced a number of mishaps in its rollout of the new stealth fighter.

This past September, an F-35A preparing for a training mission at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho caught on fire just before take off, Defense Tech reported.

During that same month, mechanical failures forced officials to temporarily ground 10 F-35 jets just one month after they were deemed 'combat ready.'

The moratorium in flight operations came 'due to the discovery of peeling and crumbling insulation in avionics cooling lines inside the fuel tanks,' the Air Force said in a statement.

Euro Typhoon created by the German/Italian and British Engineers is actually the best around! Anything American made is a pile of cra p![CN]

The Typhoon was slated as a huge flop for years, just like the F-35 is now. I guess it must be fashionable.[CN]

America should have outsourced this piece of cr,ap to China..... oh hang on they did, parts made in Canada, EU, Australia japan etc.... no wonder . Outsource to the cheapest supplier, glue it together and charge the dumb American government $300 million a pop. I cannot wait for it to go up against some real opposition.SCRAP IT AND MASS PRODUCE THE F22 AND START AGAIN ON THE NEW F36[CN]

F-22 is no use for carrier operations. And the Typhoon would not be much better. And anyway, with only one carrier operating, having a cat-n-trap carrier is stooopid - as any deck damage renders the entire carrier unserviceable.[CN]

I said back in 2004 that we should just make new-build Harriers - because they would be 1/10 the price of a F35, and we do not need F35 'enhanced' capabilities to fiight in any of those miid east or affrican confIIicts. And F35 cannot use its supersonic capabilities, because it will instantly run out of fuel. The after-burner Harrier prototype proved that, which is why they never made the Harrier supersonic.[CN]

(problems). In comparison to the F35, almost none. It was a simple airframe, built to KISS principles. RR had previously looked at the F-35 configuration, but rejected it as being totally unworkable, and recommended the Harrier layout instead. And then someone threw all that wisdom away.[CN]

Gnostic is correct. RR went the the Boeing gas powered lift system derived from the Harrier. DofD changed the spec of the aircraft after Boeing had build their delta wing and left them hanging. This was all done because Lockheed Martin had the 3 bearing nozzle system under wraps from Yak.[CN]

The first Harrier, the AV-8A, had a horrific safety record; more than half of the planes crashed. The second generation AV-8B, produced by Boeing, entered service in 1985. It¿s much safer, but still compares poorly to other jets. According to an 2002 LA Times report, the AV-8B Harrier suffered 11.44 accidents per 100,000 flight hours, compared to just 3 for the F/A-18 Hornet. Between 1971 and 2002, 45 Marine pilots were killed in 143 noncombat accidents in Harriers.[CN]

Actually, I meant that R R looked at the F-35 lift system before the Harrier was built. The first F-35 lift system was F r e n c h, but R R just laughed at it and produced the Pegasus-Harrier system instead. And everyone said: "how elegant...!". And then they promptly forgot why R R had rejected the F-35 system all those years ago.

Gnostic,it wasn't Boeing in the 1980s. Still MacD. And most of the early problems were due to lack of power. The last Pegasus was 2.5 times more powerful.

TheGnosticReply toTheGnostic
(upperty). I never said the AV8 was Boe ing. And as far as I am aware, the Marines never had the AV8A (ie, the Harrier). And the AV8B was no longer a Harrier, as MacD did many things that Hawker did not want, and did not use the new Hawker wing. And again, all the problems and incidents with the Harrier-AV8 variants, were in the US. Caused by inadequate training.

50% of Harrier AV8's crashed, and yet people are complaining about a prototype F-35 having a small fire.
