The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is one of the holiest sites in the world for the Christian faith, with millions of visitors making their pilgrimage to the site to see the birthplace of Jesus

A new 360 video is giving people around the world the chance to see the original nativity scene, by taking a virtual tour of the birthplace of Jesus.

Just in time for Christmas, viewers can transport themselves to the Holy Land to see the spot where the biblical baby is thought to have been born.

Virtual tour guide Danny Herman, known as 'Danny the Digger', takes viewers on a tour of the shrine - which draws millions of visitors each year.

Shot at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the immersive film by director and producer Pearry Teo forms part of a larger series called Bible VR, which aims to use 360 video and virtual reality to bring the bible to life.

In the video, Herman descends the steps into the shrine before describing the exact spot thought to be the birthplace of Christ.

'This is one of the holiest sites in the Holy Land,' says Herman.

'This block is marking the very spot of his delivery,' the guide explains, before pointing out another part of the shrine believed to be the manger and even the spot where the three wise men stood on their visit to the infant.

Film director Mr Pearry said: 'Aside from the fact that the foundations of Christianity began with the birth of Jesus Christ and The Church of Nativity marks the spot where tradition believes he was born, The Church of Nativity in Bethlehem is one of the oldest and most major holy site in the world.

'I believe in keeping Tradition alive by sharing with people the wonders of the world, its rich history and to open the eyes of those who may never have a chance to visit Israel and The Holy Land.

'This is more than just Christianity. For those interested in History, Architecture or Geography, it is a peak at one of the most fascinating holy sites in the world.

'There was certainly a sense of overwhelming indescribable holiness - profound silence and peacefulness pervades the entire location.

'The authorities who gave me permission to film in there were very helpful and amazingly pleasant.

'There is definitely an air around the place when you go there. You do not have to be Christian to feel something deeper, something special all around you. Even Muslims come from all over to pay their respects there, so that was definitely an eye opener.

'To see people of different religions and denominations come together, that was truly a wonderful thing.'

The footage was shot on a Nokia OZO VR camera and has been left unaltered for the most realistic effect.

Pearry added: 'Traditional Filming allows you to see what the documentarian or filmmaker chooses you should see.

'360 lets the viewer explore at their own pace, take the time to really absorb what it would really be like being there.

'It is the closest thing to experiencing The Holy Land, short of being there yourself. This makes the experience very personal, because how a person explores these locations is really up to them.'

Actually, it has been said, by G K Chesterson I believe, that if people don', or won't, believe in G-d, it is not that they won't believe in something, they WILL believe in ANYTHING! The spot in your brain and heart needs filling and you won't do it yourself, because there will be nothing to be able to fill it - you can try, but you will fail. Drugs, booze, sex, money, fame, power, all only go so far because, in the final analysis, it all comes back to yourself and, if that's all you can rely on, you'll have nothing. In the dark night of the - your - soul, you are on your own: many stories in this newspaper bear that out. Chaos and misery has been more carried out by atheist regimes and people, than true believers who try to alleviate that chaos and misery, and are persecuted FOR doing so and simply believing. I am talking of Christians, and that is the very belief system that is being intellectually, philosophically, politically, socially in the West; other places, you know about.

Mary wasn't a virgin - the myth grew out of a mistranslation from Hebrew to Greek, in the Matthew gospel when quoting Isaiah 7:14. In the original Greek, 'parthenos' (virgin) is used. However, the original Hebrew version of Isaiah refers to an 'almah' (a young, or unmarried woman), rather than a 'betulah' (a virgin).

You know that for sure? Better than archaeologists and historians who have studied the subject in depth? Since the second century?
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
The Moral ManagerReply toThe Moral Manager
It is because I have studied the subject that I am of that opinion. No serious theologian believes that the Nativity story to be true. And, if you read the canonical gospels, you will discover a plethora of contradictions. For example, the gospel named after Luke makes no reference to magi, and has the family returning to Nazareth, rather than fleeing to Egypt. And you can't provide any primary or secondary evidence for Herod's alleged massacre of the innocents, because there is none! And the census that took them to Bethlehem, according to Luke 2:1-5, was the Census of Quirinius in 6 CE. However, Herod actually died 10 years earlier in 4 BCE.
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
HowardDReply toThe Moral Manager
Bethlehem was a small place. Herod has a lot of people killed. The massacre of the innocents proably involved only a few children but was bigged up (much like a Daily Mail report). The Quirinius connection is perfecly logical if he was the census officer and not the governor, as some interpretations suggest. Trying to link dates to one census is fallacious because they had regular censuses. Also remember these dates are only a few years apart in a span of over 2000 years and all this stuff was written before the Letts Diary or Google Calendar was invented. There are indeed discrepancies, as with any historical record, but to call it "sheer utter nonsense" is not the kind of language a serious historian would use.
