All you non-believers commenting here, saying the story is nonsense - I take it you won't be bothering with Christmas, then? Or Easter, either. Why commemorate an event you don't believe in? Still, that should save you all some money, eh?Bryant Hedog
This site was proclaimed "The Site" by Constantine's mother-in-law, as she went to the Holy Land to scope out the place. This was as a result of him 'converting' to Christianity, starting what became the Holy Roman Empire, Christiansed pagan dates to bring non-Christians into the Empire, and he needed proofs to show them. Helena brought back enough wood of the 'true' Cross to make half-a-dozen of them, as well as reports of traditional sites that Christian pilgrims had been going to earlier. When the HRE became the Roman Catholic Church, the leaders, later popes, saw the potential for cash and control, ratified the places, relics and all, and the rest is, literally, history. I am a born-again, redeemed by Christ Christian, not a good one, but I don't accept this place as Christ's birthplace and, in a sense, it doesn't matter. Accept the story, or not, as you believe, but examine the reports in the Bible more carefully, and don't rely on hearsay. Merry CHRISTmas, everyone!Juanhunglo
December 17th -23rd is the Roman festival of Saturnalia- Jesus was apparently born around July- they can't even get the date right let alone the place.Bryant HedogReply toJuanhunglo
Here we go, that old chestnut. It is true, Christians would like to believe that Jesus was born on the 25/12/00, but we know He was NOT! You're right about Saturnalia, but other will point to the Solstice with the Druids, and other ceremonies worldwide. But, here's the thing - it's an Official Birthday, a Day to REMEMBER His Birth! Yes, it could have been any other time, but the early HRC chose that date to include Saturnalia/Mithras worshippers, because the Roman Empire OFFICIALY adopted Christianity as the State Religion. It stuck. But it runs into Yule, the festival of Midwinter which looks to the promise of Spring and new growth, rebirth of the earth or whatever you want to put your hope in.The Church Christianised it to include everyone, and ratified it!I don't care if you believe or not, but, if you celebrate this Season, that is what you're remembering, like or not. Of course, you can rant and rave from the cave you're in, reject it all, if you want.. sad, really.Preserved LimeyReply toOMG
Hamley's! Yes, let's talk Hamley's. My belief is that Christmas is for children. I respect those who want to celebrate the true meaning. But, I also expect people to respect my way of celebrating Christmas, which is to give as I can to those in need and make it a special time for children. I was raised in this way.Miles Militis
His mother would have told Him where he was born, as yours probably did. Bethlehem (meaning house of bread) was only a small place, and a manger is for storing fodder. "I am the bread of life..."Miles MilitisReply toMiles Militis
People used to say the same about the Hittites not existing as it was only mentioned in the bible, until archeology unearthed an entire city. Then there's the Taylor Prism, which references King Belshazzar, or the Tel Dan Stele (Victory stone) giving evidence of King David defeating two kings in battle.wendy-uk
I went there a few years ago, something very humbling about it even if you're not a believer. There are thousands of years of history there.chris8910Reply towendy-uk
Well, the history is fine but to claim that that "might " be the birthplace of Jesus is a bit of a scam, there is absolutely no proof that Jesus ever lived and there is even less proof that he was the son of a god. The stories are really good but the vast majority of the bible is fiction made to sound like fact.Mustrum Ridcully
"including the manger where the baby lay" Except for the slight problem in that all the early Hebrew texts don't say that he was born in a barn or placed in a manger. it was mistranslated, that's the only reason we in todays times think he was.JamesReply toMustrum Ridcully
If you examine closely the early scripture you do find flaws in modern translation. It was often a need to translate a word for which there are no modern direct literal translations or an idea where there are no modern points of reference. King James Bible was a very good attempt. I always remember the 'wise men' who appear to have actually turned up at the house where Jesus was living two or so years after he was born! The Roman Church played upon many of these difficulties to create an image of Christianity for the public to whom they were administering. The nativity is said to have been such a creation supposedly by St Francis!JamesReply toMustrum Ridcully

Whether it's true or not let's all enjoy Christmas and try to be nice to each other .SMB
It means census NOTHING to do with refugees...................they were travelling to be counted in the Roman census, bureaucracy and taxes are eons old. The lack of knowledge about Christmas, the bible and the nativity is shocking.
