This might surprise you young fellers but back in the early 80's EVERYONE got paid vacations, from the dishwasher up to the CEO. You started out at one week after your first year worked. Usually you got a second week after your second year worked and that was that. But we all knew somebody whose vacation time kept accruing for each year worked until it topped out at a month, or even longer! THIS WAS THE NORM.

We got 10% interest on our checking accounts. You didn't have to invest in stocks, because the banks were essentially borrowing money from you, their lender, and they paid you for the privilege with shared profits. Before Reagan, if it weren't for three oil embargos, life was much much better. After Reagan, everything started to fall to krap. Our rights were taken away one by one and today you youngsters are too naïve to remember how it was.

People want to know what is the major difference between then and now... why did everything go wrong? We could write a book of answers, but I'll just give three:

(1) There were only two American Billionaires in the early 80's. Now there are 500. That money had to come from somewhere, so the CEO's took away vacations and every other perk employees had so they could pay themselves. We were told that they had to make that kind of $$$ so America could be "competitive", but nobody was sure what other nation was going to hire our CEO's if they didn't make outrageous salaries. Japan? Germany? They don't need American CEO's!

(2) Bush Sr. and his Nixon-cabal drafted around 8 "Free Trade" Treaties to benefit their personal corporations and cronies. When Clinton was elected he saw a massive photo-op and started rubber stamping these Treaties, and enforcing them even if they weren't ratified by Congress. Essentially Bill Clinton shipped around 50 million American jobs overseas which paid between $15 to $50 an hour. Clinton GUTTED the Middle Class and don't you ever forget it! It wasn't a Republican, it was CLINTON who ruined us!
(3) Lastly, the Unions themselves are to blame. Why should people get a "Cost of Living" raise every year? All this does is RAISE THE COST OF LIVING FOR THE REST OF US. Unions got too greedy. I worked for a Union whose boss gave himself a massive multi-million dollar raise, and then manipulated the UPS workers to go on strike... FOR 25cents and hour more! They lost more while they were on strike than they could ever hope to make in those quarters which would buy then an extra few candy bars every paycheck! WTF!!!!

Non union based Menards also does this for all employees :)

I am suspicious of any employer who would pay me to not be there.

Another example of the business world getting back to normal after Bush and Cheney screwed everything up by taking away all the workers' pay and perks and allowing their rich CEO buddies to keep it all.

Centro is a class operation. Besides caring about employees burn-outs, it realizes that it increase good production for the company.

And even the much hated, much maligned Walmart gives its employees, with 15 years or more service, 4 weeks paid vacation.

May goodness; it only takes 15 years to earn vacation with Walmart??

My son works for Intel in a very stressful job. Every few years (I do not know all of the timing nor rules), he & others, get a very long paid sabatical. It is around 3 months. Without the time off, these employees would not be able to fuction.

the federal government over pays their people and they take way more time off. especially congress.

I really wish I could find a job like this. I work in the field of substance abuse there is such a high rate of burn out and turn over. We really need to have something like sabbaticals but they barely pay us as it is. It's depressing to get news that someone you've worked with for 6 months to a year has died. It never gets easy.

the company i worked for gave you two weeks every year beginning at your first year, then at five yrs gave you another week... 12 yrs then you got four weeks a year.. at 15 you got the four weeks along with three extra days... plus you also got 5 days a year sick pay and holiday pay for major holidays. so what is so great about a 3 wek vacation just every four yrs?

It's fine until it is no longer sustainable. This will happen as companies will have to increase prices to keep employees happy. Eventually, customers go looking for better deals. Our government is a perfect example, perks, time off, Man, what time off! Tax increases are needed to pay for this. This is the " kiss of death" in the making and nobody sees it, nor do they care. Let me see the same people run a company, keep customers happy, and cater to their employee demands! Employees are fine as long as you give them a stress free environment, time off, bonuses, longer lunch and coffee breaks, babysitters, transportation, and whatever the hell else they expect! The minute business gets slow and the goodies stop, there's going to be a problem! In today's world, nothing is certain, no guarantee that business will always be good. Nobody wants to hear about that, though! Be prepared folks, this will come to an end. It will never be feasible over time. Why anyone open a business today is anyone's guess!!!!!

More likely, his employee-retention is much higher than normal, which more than pays for the vacations by saving him money on the hiring/training end and in Human Resources. I think he is on to something!

Fedex..... standard policy....has you earning paid vacation the day you start working, you have additional paid personal days as well as floating holidays not to be confused with the normally observed 7 holidays ...then you have sick leave...best of all if you don't use your sick leave at the end of the year you are paid for it.....so maybe it's time some of these other companies took a closer look at this employee friendly corporations...

Are you young or brain washed. Before Reagan started the war on workers, companies paid benefits like this --- even better. When adjusted for inflation, they paid even higher wages. Jobs were NOT shipped overseas. Yes companies were still extremely profitable. How was that possible. Easy, the executives were not paid hundreds of times more than the average worker but still made enough money to live a great life. You see, income redistribution made the rich richer and disturbed the working class. What Democrats are after is the return to FAIR distribution. Obozo is not what we should call our current president, it is what we should call middle class americans who support the Republican party as it stands today. You know for "Oh Bozo have you got a clue to what has been done to you"

Face it. They can say how nice this is, but with smart phones, lap tops, tablets and work from home programs, they have you 24/7. Recently retired, I never hade a personal day or vacation when I was not contacted at some point due to company business.

What's the big deal? The U.S. government pays millions great salaries to do nothing but get in the masses way on an annual basis. Know why government workers are called, Seagulls? All they do is eat,**** and squawk and you can't shoot them cause they are protected by their keepers, the government. You may laugh now.

Apparently you're jealous. Of what, I'm not sure. I worked for the government for 30 years. I often worked 40-60 hours a week, and I didn't get paid for the OT. A lot of us did. And our supervisors pretended not to notice. So before you open that a--h--- you can a mouth, try to be informed and intelligent.

Out of business? You should do some fact checking. They are one of the healthiest companies around with very little turnover and stacks of resume's a mile high. Hats off to them for getting it right and taking care of their most important assets. Their employees.

Am I missing something? Isn't this just simply paid vacation with a new name? Or is it in addition to their normal paid vacation time? Almost every company gives paid vacation time so I'm not quite sure why this is news. Granted other companies may not be as generous as this company, but still vacation. My husband has worked for Corning for many years and gets 6 weeks paid vacation a year. Or sabbatical, if you will. And every 5 years Corning gives their employees an 2 extra weeks paid vacation. I worked for Verizon Wireless for about 7 years and they offer a very generous vacation package. Although, in the case with Verizon they have to have good benefits or no one would ever work for them.

Not to mention, the 10 other days are usually called sick or personal days.

Junebug.....I hate to inform you...and everyone else.....The United States of America is the ONLY country in the world that has NO laws in regards to vacations. In other words, your employer does NOT have to give you any. (no Vacation Nation)
