I am a teacher and I agree whole-heartedly with this article, but you left out a few things and I don't think these kids will be O.K. in the future unless the whole world changes with them. They don't learn respect for authorities because they question everything and talk back to everybody. They are not learning proper English because they are never corrected for usage of words in a sentence. They are given everything they ask for and most of the time do nothing in return. Most of them accept failure and don't think about how to succeed. Then we wonder why our children are behind the other major countries in the world in the major school subjects. They can't even sit and listen to what is being taught.

its totaly out of hand today in our school systems... they dont learn how to write.. well my grandson went for his drivers license and did not get it because he could not SIGN his name.. only knew how to print.. took him home and tought him how to SIGN his name.. it seems to me an a lot of others the only thing they teach today is what is necessary to pass the tests the schools need to get money.. not really interested in the future for the students

The schools in my town stopped teaching cursive five years ago. They will never be able to read the Declaration of Independence or be able to decipher old historic documents. This is deliberate on the part of the government. They don't want college graduates of the future to have the skill to be able to tell if the versions of history posted on the internet are true or invented by the government. Another problem is that if a student does not know how to write cursive they cannot legally sign their name. A signature is not legal if it is not rendered in cursive. Of course they have stopped teaching history and civics in public schools. This too is deliberate. If you don't understand government or our history you can be led like sheep to the poling booths and told who to vote for and you just will. If you don't understand civics you won't know what your rights are or how government works.

It is still legal to "sign" you name by printing it or with an X (when witnessed by another person). Electronic signatures are replacing actual written signatures on many legal documents now filed with government agencies.

I kept calling the school to say that my child has not learned cursive writing,Their response..."these kids will be on a computer anyway". I then told them to stop handing out the blue books for written answers.

Back when I was in school (We're talking in the 70') there wasn't any of this "politically correct" stuff going on. Teachers were respected. Only one language was spoken, and that was English. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance. We learned how to interact with others by actually talking to them face to face. We went outside and played after school. We did our homework with paper and pens. The current generation of children will never know what it's like. What scares me is that these are the children that will be running the country in 30-40 years from now.

Years ago I was living in Montana and made friends with a girl who lived across the street. She was in college at the time. But, whenever we played Yahtzee, she would haul out her calculater to add up her score. I made her stop that and told her to use the brains God gave her! Seems she didn't need her calculater afterall! Also my Dad would interview new job applicants and found there were college graduates who could not do simple fractions and yet they still expected to be paid the "big bucks". Lot's of luck there. When I was in school, there were no calculators or computers. We were expected to learn by using our own brains. Afraid to think what the future holds with all the "cheats" the kids are using in the schools now a days. One thing...USE YOUR BRAINS! That's why you have them!

I graduated in "71. We had computers. They were called, "slide rules". You had to provide your own logic. Kids today don't even know what that is, neither the slide rule nor the logic.

This woman had me right up until the last paragraph. She's wrong; they won't be ok.

Kids today are growing up so self centered and narcissistic, unable to resolve issues on their own, and incapable of handling themselves with other people because they are constantly told what to do, what to say and how to behave that they simply don't learn to rely upon themselves.

They grow up frustrated and incapable, so they shoot up schools and workplaces.

Kids are so lead around by the nose that they are in some serious trouble as they grow up and go out into the real world.

I have to respond this comment. Are you saying they are told to be rude to everyone, not to learn anything that doesn't directly affect them, etc.? Personally I think the problem lies with NOT being told what to do, what to say and how to say it without offending others, how to behave in a civilized society, and how to figure out problems they will face as adults! I have raised two wonderful children to adulthood by example. I didn't blame the school or teachers for not teaching, I blamed my children for not paying attention and not learning what they were being taught. I graduated in 1974 and my children in 2000 and 2004. One had learning difficulties and we figured out how to present things so he could figure it out with reasoning. They are very successful, compassionate and caring adults with beautiful well mannered children of their own! Please, parents TELL and teach your children.

Some parents have no problem having their kids dummied down as they are products of the same system. There is nothing wrong with sitting up straight, learning, and memorizing. Social skills are learned along the way and not a requirement for intelligence or education. Such a sad family we are reading about here and to think of the millions others just like them. There is a difference between kids learning to stand up for themselves and being rude, loud mouthed obnoxious pieces of human waste which we see in the young every day of the week. Shopping used to be a pleasure until parents lacking social graces allowed their darlings to invade the stores, restaurants, theaters, parks, and of course schools with their new envious freedoms. And, they wonder why getting teachers is so difficult! This article does a great job explaining. There's your answer.

High school kids can't do simple math. My wife works in a bank, the kids come in with there paychecks and want some cash back. The can't do the subtraction and will ask for a calculator.

I do not understand why cursive writing is not being taught. The "computer" exuse does not fly. We have had printing since the invention ot the printing press and typewriters and still used cursive. So computers use printing. Big deal. You should still know how to write cursive. How will they sign legal agreements? Surely not by printing.

They will sign with their "X".
My dad could even write in German cursive. Can you imagine what these kids look like to the rest of the civilized world? With our world economy, how can future Americans expect to be taken seriously in a global business world?

My husband was s teacher for 23 years, had three degrees, a brilliant man, excellent teacher. That didn't prevent his students from bring failures, being rude and disinterested know-nothings. Loser kids are losers because of parents. Look at yourselves, the homelife and discipline you provide and the limits you set, if any. Your kids are YOUR problems, don't blame others for your failures!

Well-stated. (but likely to fall on deaf ears) People believe whatever philosophies that agree with what behaviors are most convenient to them.

I just returned from the bathroom where I had to lose breakfast after reading the nauseating Politically Correct narrative that the PC people have been trying to sell us for years. All this psycho-babble and LAZY parenting we have in the World is why we have such empty-headed big mouths (and parents) torturing the rest of us with their sense of entitlement. Poor teachers that get blamed for every ill in society.

We are raising and teaching kids to be lazy, ignorant, and unable to survive if the switch was to get flipped. When that time comes, They will all lay down and die. I saw a big taste of that 10 years ago w/hurricane Katrina. The truth was scarey! More so that the storm itself.

If you really want to confuse a teen these day, if you are due 97 cents change, tell them you well give them 3 cents so they can give you back a dollar instead. Sit back and watch the look on their face while they try to figure out that one.

Bwa hahahahahha! I have seen this before and the kid would actually pull out his cell phone and use the calculator app to figure it out.

let me make it simple-all kids have to learn today is:
how to put on a condom
white people are responsible for ALL the ills of the world(at least those that ISRAEL has not been blamed for).
The world owes you a living just for taking up space
you are all victims

I have to disagree with the statement that "Teachers see each child as an individual learner, with unique abilities, and they look for creative ways to nurture and encourage every student."

It's much more like "dumb down the entire class for one idiot" in my experience. When I was in school, we had separate sections for advanced students (yeah, I was in it), but today, everybody has to wait for that one lump that just can't understand that "2+2=4."

It's called "Common Core," but it should be labelled "Common Crap."

Thanks Obama.

Today's children have NO imagination or read a good book.
All they and their parent's want to do is on some type of computer.
What a shame their will be no great inventors or military heroes.
