And the dregs of the earth no matter who it is will want to make a profit from his death, no matter what his contribution was to this world , dragging himself up to become an icon in his field still anything they can use to get more readers,to profit there own pockets, show respect and wait until the facts are known. It's disgusting low life people should be ashamed lawyers, yahoo, all liars, and even if he did have problems is it your business who cares it was his life, no wonder he locked himself away from all this . I was not a big fan but liked some of his music, but every day yet another shot at discrediting this person because he has no way of defending his past.

That's true with anyone who is well known in the entertainment world. It is not surprising if anyone his age take pain killers. Most people do and their are a few who try their best to stay away from them. I have seen to many people who become dependent on them and to many doctors who has given them out like candy. But it has nothing to do with a person character. Some people like and feed off of smut and rumors. None of us live in this world without pain, heartache or anything else the world throw at us. I say RIP Prince, what ever pain you have went through is now over. Thank you for your music.

We live in a money hungry society where everything revolves around money.

Dentists love the candy companies cause candies causes decays and people keep coming back.

Doctors love drug companies cause drugs keep patients coming back.

Oil companies love car manufactures cause they keep producing cars that keep coming back for more gas.

If someone ever developed a cure for cancer many doctors and companies that profit from cancer would go out of business.

In many cases, we are also somewhat lazy, because a pill is so much simpler than doing the actual work that's been assigned by the physical therapist, for the most part, too!

The exam of the body is only part of the autopsy. By definition, it is a discovery process of life before death and what caused the death. His death cert. might read that cause of death was over filled lungs (with fluid) which is really cause by over dosing of drugs. Or, may read atrial fibrillation...heart beating irregulary second to drugs. The tx report will prove what caused death. He may have died of esphixiation due to a seizure caused by poor seizure drug levels or just the drugs. Many options here.

We people have a distortion in perception here. Yes, we loved many artists who graced our lives with music and art and film and comedy but a higher piece of us knew that their lives were on the fringe and it was only the art form that we were privy to. So what do we do? We put all our energy into that small part of their lives and glorify it ignoring the dark side. Making them an idol. Crying over them, devastated. I find this uncanny. Let their drug induced walk thru life just be a signal, an example of what is false. Its strange how we choose not to see the whole. We will grab any piece of the whole and use that for adoration. When you have talent you can radiate a finer energy without the distortion, the drugs and alcohol. And yet, this is the example that keeps on and on for our next generation that its alright. We have not progressed.

Bettye198: Be careful that your perception is not distorted and be gullible from people second guessing that he took cocaine, ect..not surprising that it came from a lawyer of Prince's siblings who are looking into claiming Prince's money. Until the autopsy results are released, some people can have all types of biases and start rumors. Let's stay with the facts. The same happened with Michael Jackson before the medical facts were released. Same mentality, same habits, same rumors...

Throughout history, many great artists and poets have left enduring legacies of beauty for the world's heritage. It is not particularly uncommon for those who produce sensitive, universal beauty to be users of the pharmacopeia of Nature.

Black WidowReply tobettye198

Nicely put Bettye. Denial runs deep and it's the saddest when it happens to a family member. Addicts/alcoholics are excellent at hiding their illness and it's easier to look the other way. Having a substance dependence doesn't take away the good parts of any human being, as we all are flawed in one way or another. Even when loved ones recognize a problem, it takes the addict/alcoholic to make the choice to clean up. Those who don't, will eventually succumb. It's a deeply troubling situation for any family/loved ones, because precious little they do can change the course, unless the addict/alcoholic wishes to do so themselves. Addiction is only a symptom of much deeper, internal issues. We need to take the stigma away and beef up our mental health system. I know you were addressing celebrities, but they are just a sliver of what's happening across the country with dependency issues.

Sorry, but most of us don't need to idolize artists or follow their lifestyle. Prince was a musical genius. His connection to his audience was powerful and profound (watch his concert videos now on YouTube.) That does not mean any of us need to walk his path. That was all his own.

If your advice ruled the day, we'd be left with clean artists like Taylor Swift and all our songs would be about meanie boys and shopping. Ugh. Or we'd be stuck with artificial artists like Beyoncé and Katy Perry and Skrillex. I'm not willing to compromise my tastes in music to look for your "true" paths. Artists of all sorts have no obligation to bring me a safe, wholesome message. That kind of fakery only continues the present course of auto-tuned mediocrities more interested in brands and selfies than music. Prince was far, far above that sort of thing, thank dog.

Dr's do only if you have a lot of money. Try asking for opiate painkillers if you just have insurance. They'll likely drop you. Happened to me when I asked for a refill after breaking my hand.

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
ThumpReply toDoug

No doctors around here give out pain meds like that. There is also plenty of control. There is so much control that they try hard not to prescribe it. They could lose their ability to prescribe meds with one small mistake. I have a 10" scar down my spine and barely able to move some days but they give me the meds 1 step up from ibuprofen. There is a heroine epidemic in my area because they stopped prescribing pain meds. Heroine has become less expensive and easier to obtain than pain meds.

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
SusanReply toDoug

In control???? In his little world he was in control maybe, of those around him, but not in control of his health, not able to control the drugs. OD'd twice in a week-- some control, Doug. You can blame the doctors, but I blame the person who jams them down the throat.

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]

Thump, I totally agree with you, I live in severe chronic pain due to disease every day of my life. I go to a pain specialist once a month, every month. He is the only Dr, out of many that I've seen, that understands what people in real severe pain go thru daily. He does random drug testing to ensure the pain med is taking correctly. You should find yourself a good one. he has saved my life.

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
Stef

In the end, how he died does not affect my own life. I do hope that if the opiod drugs had a major influence of his death, that there will be serious talks about dispensing these drugs. They are useful and needful to some people, but too easy to circumvent the rules when you have money.

Having a family member working for the VA pharmacy, it is NOT easy for lower-economic class people to get even the ones prescribed to them

This makes me think of Elvis. There are many stories regarding Elvis' hatred of street drugs; if he heard you were using while under his employ you were good as gone. Yet he himself was consuming an unholy regimen of prescription drugs each and every day. To him that was perfectly okay, since they were obtained from a pharmacy and not on the street. He just didn't comprehend that they were - and are - exactly the same thing; the only difference is vested interests have determined drug X is legal but drug Y is not. Prince was using drugs made by a billion-dollar corporation, but not drugs made by a billion-dollar cartel... does that make him any better? (Or worse, for that matter?) Opiates are amazing drugs with many uses, both legal and otherwise. But they are dangerous as hell, as the smallest mistake in calculating one's dosage can be lethal

The reason why drug X is legal and drug Y is illegal is because you can make drug Y yourself and therefore you can sell it yourself and the government doesn't make any money off taxes. so they make it illegal. it has nothing to do with whether it's deadly or not

Interestingly, Judy Garland comes to mind. Her daughter said that Judy was against drugs and would not stand for any of that around her. The thing was, she was taking "prescription medication" and didn't think it was bad because it came from a doctor. In the end, the "medication" took her life. I think Dorothy Dandridge and Marilyn Monroe died the same way... it was Prescription Medication that did it.

That is the power of "authority figures". Check out "Milgram Experiment",

The Milgram experiment on obedience to authority figures was a series of social psychology experiments conducted by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram. They measured the willingness of study participants, men from a diverse range of occupations with varying levels of education, to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts conflicting with their personal conscience; the experiment found, unexpectedly, that a very high proportion of people were prepared to obey, albeit unwillingly, even if apparently causing serious injury and distress.

2 things for you Drama Queen. Get your facts straight before mouthing off! 1. Prescription meds and "street" drugs are NOT the same thing at all. Heroin is NOT Demerol and Opium is NOT Vicodin. It is far easier to accidentally OD on street drugs than prescription drugs because dealers aren't marking their bags w/instructions and potency (milligrams). There is rarely, if any documented quality control. 2. You do NOT know what Prince or Elvis comprehended concerning the difference between scrip meds and street drugs and how they justified their own consumption. Even Prince's closest friends and lovers claim they didn't have any idea that he was a drug addict (the public does not even know that yet). Elvis was self medicating for NO particular disease (besides possibly a broken heart, self diagnosed anxiety, stress and a failed marriage). Elvis also self medicated w/FOOD. Yes, it appears he was not ingesting "street" drugs (if you mean illegally manufactured drugs for sale outside of a pharmacy setting), but he was certainly taking at least 2, possibly 3 different opiates, sleeping pills, barbiturates, sedatives, antihistamines and tranquilizers. Medical examiners said these drugs were indicated for treatment generally, but in fact, he did NOT suffer from any disease these drugs are indicated for, except perhaps, anxiety insomnia. There are NO records which indicate that Elvis was in chronic pain.

Nothing new. Most Americans are on some kind of pill to help with their lives. It's rare nowadays to find a person not on statins, painkillers (OTC and prescription), diabetes meds, migraines, glaucoma pills, sleeping pills, sedatives, etc.

Many uses marijuana, too, the safest of all medicine!!

Nothing wrong with medicine if it helps you. What's wrong are those people who discriminate and condemn those who use substances, artificial and natural, to help them with their lives. It's the bigots that are the monsters, not those using medicine.

I bet you, reader, is on some kind of meds now, whatever it maybe.

Prince was just another drug addict. Reports the other day said he purchased $40K worth of pain killers at a time for 30 years. Then reports say he didn't have perscriptions. That is why there is an investigation to see where those drugs came from.

Marijuana is NOT a medicine! It is an illegal narcotic, and we need to put someone in the White House that will allow the federal agents to ENFORCE THE LAW! Officials in states that declared that drug legal need to be at least removed from office and possibly serve some prison time as well

BIG difference between statins and many other meds and opoids and cocaine and can't be compared. Statins, heart/BP meds, NSAIDS are NOT habit forming and have no street value. Also big difference between pain killers by prescription and used as directed and those same pain killers bought off the street and/or illegally. Yes, many people take meds to "help with their lives" that don't leave you zoned out and hooked on them. YOU sound like someone looking for an excuse for your drug use.

I don't understand why people need someone who suffers to bleed out rathe than accept that chronic pain is an invisible and terribly debilitating condition. With fame and money you can buy anything you want. Prince probably had a dealer to purchase his drugs/meds from. He probably was in a network of people who could and would get what he wanted(not always needed)at the snap of his fingers. My dentist gave me a prescription for Ox with four refills I did not pick it up because I had heard about people getting addicted on it, something I did not want to do. My daughter is an RN and she always refuse her pain prescriptions and opt for over the counter instead. I wish things had turned out differently for Prince and I hope others will learn from this.

Prince is not the first singer/actor this has happened to and won't be the last. When you surround yourself with people who are on your payroll they do not tell you no.

The federal government have been taking a closer look at these cases in recent years not so much because of the fame of the person, but because of the appearance that once legitimate professions (i.e. doctors and pharmacies) have colluded to cash in on the rich and famous to get them the drugs they wanted. What was once under the jurisdiction of the mafia and drug lords seems now to be big business for doctors and pharmacists. This is one of the reasons Michael Jackson's doctor now sits in prison.

Barbara, most RN's as are Dr.s, are ignorant to what real severe pain is like. The are judgmental of the people that truly need a pain med. If these so called Medical Professionals were ever inflicted with a disease that caused severe chronic pain, they would cry like babies, and beg for a pain med to get even just some slight relief of the pain they face every minute of every day. RN's are the worst, a measly associates degree, and the think they know everything
