Thai students caught using 'Mission Impossible' exam spy glasses

A top Thai medical college has caught students using spy cameras linked to smartwatches to cheat during exams in what some social media users on Monday compared to a plot straight out of a Mission Impossible movie.[CN]

Arthit Ourairat, the rector of Rangsit University, posted pictures of the hi-tech cheating equipment on his Facebook page on Sunday evening, announcing that the entrance exam in question had been cancelled after the plot was discovered.[CN]

Three students used glasses with wireless cameras embedded in their frames to transmit images to a group of as yet unnamed people, who then sent the answers to the smartwatches.[CN]

Arthit said the trio had paid 800,000 baht ($23,000) each to the tutor group for the equipment and the answers.[CN]

“The team did it in real-time,” Arthit wrote.[CN]

“这批团伙实时作案” Arthit写道。

Thailand’s Channel 3 news reported Monday that the students had been blacklisted.

“We want this to be known in public to make people aware that we must be careful, particularly for medical exams where there is high demand among students but not many vacancies,” Arthit told the network.

His original post went viral, with many either praising the students for their ingenuity or condemning them for cheating.

“If they had passed and graduated, we might have had illegal doctors working for us,” wrote a Facebook user.

Others were more impressed. “Cool,” wrote one. “Like Hollywood or Mission Impossible.”

Medical degrees are highly sought after in Thailand, where doctors can make small fortunes in a private sector that has become one of the world’s treatment hubs.

Despite more than a decade of impressive economic growth, Thailand’s education system is in dire need of reform with rote learning, long hours and poor international test scores still commonplace.

In the 2014 PISA rankings, which measures global educational standards, Thai students performed below the global average and much worse than those from poorer Vietnam in subjects like maths and science.

Last year the World Bank said improving poor quality education was the most important step the kingdom could take to securing a better future, with one third of Thai 15-year-olds “functionally illiterate” – lacking the basic reading skills to manage their lives in the modern world.

Critics say the kingdom’s high corruption levels and ongoing political instability has made deep-seated education reforms impossible over the last decade.

Those crafty Thailanders. 20 years ago while I was traveling there a jewel thief was arrested who had surgically implanted a suction device in his hand. Tubing ran through the perps lower arm to his palm and while he was inspecting loose diamonds on a store counter, he would squeeze a pump and suck a diamond into the tube. An ingenious idea but his arrogance got him caught when an alert employee watched as several rocks seemed to levitate from the display case to his palm.[CN]

I have lived in Thailand and ANYTHING can be forgotten and covered up for the right amount of money. No surprises here. I taught at some of the govt high schools in Bangkok and cheating is a way of life for Thai students. They excel at copying from each other and actually using their phones to get answers while taking mid term exams. Students pass classes without ever attending or learning anything. One Thai high school teacher (Roi Et province) told me "there are no bad students, only bad teachers". So failing a student means you're not a good teacher and therefore you lose face and it's all about face. In Thailand it isn't about how educated a person is, it's about where you went to school. $23,000, tells you something right there. Mom and dad are rich, that's how they got into Rangsit in the first place![CN]

I agree with you entirely as i am an English teacher here in Thailand now for over 10 years and the Thai students are among the laziest kids in the world and constantly copy each other in lessons and tests when checking their papers you can easily see who are cheating

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
Sawadee2000Reply toRVN Vet

I completely agree that cheating is endemic in Thai schools. I've been teaching here for over 10 years. I was told at my first school that students are not allowed to fail.....under ANY circumstance., including not showing up for a single class, doing any homework assignments or taking any tests.A friend and colleague once gave an exam to his mathyom 6 class (twelfth grade). After most of the students failed (no big surprise since most Thai students never even glance at their books or notebook) The Thai head of the English department told him to post the answers outside the classroom and then have the students retake the exam. I sure you will be shocked, shocked I say, that the entire class scored 100%, and those were the scores that were recorded. No wonder Thailand does soooo poorly when compared to her ASEAN neighbors. Unfortunately reality sets in when students go to take a standardized test in hopes of studying abroad. Suddenly the Emperor is discovered to be stark naked.Hmmmm, how did paying someone else to do your homework work out for you now Somchai and Somporn?

Sawadee2000Reply toRVN Vet

Russell...Where to start? Let's go point for point. First of all. despite some appalling examples of bad education here, there are MANY well-educated Thais, especially in professional occupations. About two years ago I had arthroscopic surgery here i Lampang to repair a torn rotator cuff. My surgeon was as competent as any doctor, anywhere in the world. My surgery was not only successful, but didn't coat me one baht, since I have a health plan with my hospital here. About 18 months ago I had a quadruple bypass performed at the same hospital. Once again, my surgical team was top of the line, spoke perfect English, ad had a wicked sense of humor. Once again this cost me nothing.

Native English teachers are told NOT to speak Thai in the classroom. THAT'S the jpb of Thai assistants.IMy Thai by the way, well not advanced enough to engage in a philosophical conversation, is quite adequate. When necessary I might have to explain something to a Thai teacher, but otherwise I try to help my students acquire English in the same way we did when we were first learning it from our parents. Overall I've had pretty fair success.

By the way, you refer to "so-called" English teachers. Let me inform you that the days when some unqualified back-packer could teach in a Thai school is LONG gone. Today you need to have (at least) a B.A. in education in order to teach here. A few years ago I had to take four tests up in Chiang Mai order to receive a teaching license. Believe me we are not "ripping off" the Thai people.

You claim that "60% of Thais live in Isaan and they do not speak Thai". Russell, what the hell have you been smoking. By the way they do in fact speak Thai. although many speak Lao as well. My nine year old son can speak "Issan", as well as Thai, English and Chinese.

In summary, no one knows better than I the serious deficiencies in the Thai education system. Luckily I 've been teaching Annuban for some years now, where most children are actually happy to learn new thing.....including English.

Despite your supposed 30 years here. you are obviously blowing smoke out of your ก้น!

The corruption of Thailand all comes from the Thai royal family. They legally can abuse the nation without fear of criticism or punishment. This trickles down to the rest of society with civil servants given privileges over others in the nation. They exploit their positions and the people they encounter in them. Corruption rules Thailand and it all starts with the Thai royals. A post like this one I am writing would get you 15 years in jail in Thailand. This is the horrible truth that the media is so lazy to point out. Thailand's royals are human rights abusers. Only the end of the Thai royal privileges would give Thailand a chance to end its human rights abuses and for people to feel free to criticize corruption. Until that day, blame Thai King Bhumipol and his corrupt family because they are the root source of all abuse and corruption in the nation.

I just had a full blood work-up done, and on two of the three results not in the normal range, my doctor couldn't tell me what the most likely cause of the abnormality nor tell me what the test initials stood for. A quick internet search and I found out on my own. Needless to say, I found a new doctor immediately.

Apparently, this is a sort of culture in Thailand's education system. Sounds like they need to get these things under control. Not doing so will just hurt the country in the long run and employers will think twice about hiring someone who went to school in Thailand.

That's why individual countries and the International community both require extensive Board exams. You might be able to BS your way through school, but even the smart students that worked hard have to take 2 or more cracks at passing those.
