We, as a nation, have complete control over who we elect as our Senators and Representatives. If I received an 11% favorable rating at my place of employment my boss would quickly replace me. We elect our Congressmen (and women) to represent us and to work on our behalf. So, why then, do we allow them to remain at their jobs when they clearly aren’t performing to our satisfaction? Our elected officials more often than not forget who the boss is. Oh, they always remember when it is time for reelection but soon after, they revert back to their old habits. They do not care about us.

PAY AND RETIREMENT

There are 529 members of Congress and they all make at least $174,000 per year. Would you like to work at a job where you would be guaranteed a lifetime pension after just five years of working for them? How would you like to work less than half the year and still get the full $174,000 salary? That’s right; after just five years you would get a pension beginning at the age of 62 for the rest of your life. If you are able to put in 20 years at that job you can retire at 50 and after 25 years of Congressional public service you can retire with benefits immediately. Imagine all of that and actually only working less than half the year. The House of Representatives is scheduled to meet in Washington D.C. just 111 days in 2016. The Senate will meet more often but will still only get together 149 times. Some will say that just because they aren’t meeting those other times doesn’t mean they aren’t working. It may be true that some are conducting official business in their representative states during their 255 days off but the bottom line is there is no requirement to do so.
