I dont buy that the US is behind at all. After their 2 tests where the missiles "vanished" we never heard about it again. I have a sneaking suspicion that they didnt vanish, they just claimed they did so others wouldnt think we had the tech. I think its highly likely both were a success and they have been further developing and refining the technology. There is no way that china, the country of stolen everything could ever come up with something like this on their own when they are late to the party.
I know enough about several projects and the tech involved to know that some of the public released versions are several years if not 10 years behind. I have no doubt the US already has this working and i know china has a habit of stealing and lying. If they say they have it 100% working i dont believe them. If hypersonic goes up to mach 10 then what's the terminology used for faster than hypersonic? I googled it myself, I guess it's 'interstellar' speed which goes up to 1% of light speed (6 million mph) At interstellar speed it's pretty much too hot to survive in our planets atmosphere (with current materials) and the craft is basically a space ship.
Don't be surprised at what China develops. Their scientists are educated at MIT and what they can't develop, they steal. And our Government is powerless to stop them.

When I was a student in Northern Arizona University in the 1960s, the CIA considered me as very intelligent and have high IQ. They wanted me to work in President Nixon's White House. If I were working in the White House , I would considered all nations of this world are good friends of the United States. The U S Government has only friends and has no enemy. I would not blame Cuba, North Korea, China , Russia and Iran for all the problems and suffering of the Americans people. The problems and suffering of the American people were created by American people themselves and not people in foreign countries.

Don't be so quick to place any blame on American corporations there are Government limits, approval and oversight on what can be sold or shared, particularly technology that could have military applications. China has been heavily engaged in corporate, military, and political espionage for many decades and have stolen much of the technology that they have.
It doesn't help that stupid companies build factories there, train Chinese workers how to make their product and then look generally shocked to see Chinese competitors in the industry and Chinese knockoff products.

The US is facing the same self inflicted wounds. When a country chooses their leaders based on who will give the most "free" stuff to the unproductive, it is inevitable that the productive will decline under the strain of carrying an ever rising percentage of the population.
It is far more likely for a civilization to be destroyed by a stronger military power than through their own technology.
If they have the technology working already and we're still developing it (for at least 3.5 more years), it seems like they aren't the ones with stolen technology.
Every physics student I know at a local university is Chinese. They don't have to steal advanced technology, Big Education will teach it to them for a few bucks.
