I first salt the broccoli and allow it to sit for an hour, then I rinse it and steam it. I feel that this method removes much of the pesticide that I KNOW is used on the plant. The best is when I pick it fresh from my positively organic garden.
Microwaving absolutely alters the make up of food (and water for that matter) and destroys the nutrients. Don't let what the flip-floppers say...use your common sense.
Who in their right mind boils broccoli anyway? Steam it. Get a steamer basket, rinse broccoli IN THE BASKET, put enough water to almost touch the basket. Drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Lid. High heat for 5 minutes, from cold to boil. Remove from heat. Rest with lid on 1 to 3 minutes depending on hardness preference. Should be firm, not hard, and definitely NOT soggy. Over cooked broccoli is nasty and smells like a fart. Basically use this method for any steamed veggie. Carrots take longer. Asparagus takes less, but always start with 5 minute rule and adjust time on the back end. You're welcome.
I prefer the steaming method. Reading this article, I was reminded of potatoes and how we should refrain from eating too much carbs. I love potatoes, so I found a good substitute in the form of mash, like mashed potatoes. Steam broccoli, cauliflower, yams, onion, and garlic. Throw em all in a blender with just a little olive oil, spices, and a small amount of the leftover hot water. Make it the same consistency as mashed potatoes. Absolutely healthy and tastes great!!!!!
Huh? I switched from microwaving my broccoli to steaming it using a stove top a few years ago because I read microwaving destroys some of the nutrients. I wind up with more to wash but I think I'll stick to using the stove top.
I've always steamed my broccoli. The advise to microwave it though, is total bee ess! Microwaves break down and reorder molecules in food in an unnatural way. They are totally unhealthy.
I saute minced onions and garlic in olive oil, smoked paprika, fresh ground pepper, add broccoli florets, stir fry a bit, remove and add a little fresh squeezed lemon juice.
Sometimes I will add a little chicken stock, and when it heats up add corn starch dissolved in water. When it thickens, toss everything together to coat.
