The method I learned from my children's dentist was to broil the broccoli in the oven. Place the freshly cut up broccoli in a bowl and sprinkle with a little olive oil and kosher salt. Set your oven on broil high heat and then place broccoli on a baking sheet and broil for 5 to 7 minutes. Broccoli will be slightly crispy with a smoked taste and very tasty. My kids are now avid broccoli lovers because of this.

Next week's Yahoo food article: Cooking broccoli can get you violently ill.

At the point I think the broccoli is slightly still firm drain the water and spray with cold water. This will set the color, flavor and stop the loss of nutrients.

I only eat organic veggies, and then only eat them raw. I don't eat sugar, white rice or wheat. I don't eat meat of any kind and I believe that eating eggs is just wrong. I drink natural spring water that has not been filtered as that removes essential minerals. I stay out of the sun, living in a house that has not cooling or heating system....really bad for the environment and keeps my air natural too.

Admittedly, I cannot wait to die because my life sucks.

dont worry, when you die youll either go to heaven or have many virgins to be with. unless youve been bad, youll be in a firey burning lake. so enjoy your veggies.

Just for you im going to have an anti vegan day. for breakfast ill eat eggs with waffles or pancakes with sugar filled syrup. then for lunch ill have a burger, and then dinner will be a nice filet. so again, enjoy those carrots!

Your really going to be pi--- if you die before your meat eating friends, if you have any.

Everything in moderation, from booze to deserts.

"Admittedly, I cannot wait to die because my life sucks."

That cracked me up.

But I guess you know that many beneficial compounds are concentrated by cooking some veggies, such as tomatoes (which is actually a fruit, but you're not paying for this advice, so just be quiet).

Lycopene is a cancer preventative (antioxidant) that is concentrated when tomatoes are cooked. Stewed tomatoes are thought to inhibit prostate cancer.

Bill, don't forget to add some fat (preferably olive oil) to your cooked tomatoes to maximize absorption of that lycopene. :-)

Wow Mike, I hope you are never cold, or are in a heat wave. How are eggs bad if you just have a few per week. The chicken does not die, you know. I certainly hope you go to heaven, because you sound like good people to me.

While the chicken may not die, the offspring do. Eating eggs is the chicken equivalent to abortion.

Broccoli is the best when it's under the broiler for a few minutes. Delicious.

It is not politically correct to say this, but microwaving is seriously deleterious to the quality of any food. There are people won't even use the microwave to warm their food or heat water for a cup of coffee.

Buy it frozen as it'll retain virtually ALL its nutrients because it's processed within a few hours of harvest and THEN steam it in the microwave. There's lots of producers who offer vegetables in wrapping safe for microwave use thereby eliminating the need to dirty cookware.

Yep, they got this wrong. Saute with olive oil and butter, start with garlic and hot pepper flakes and then add the broccoli. It sure tastes better than anything close to steaming. I do all veggies this way. I've never tried the oven. I don't add water to anything except pasta and the coffee maker.

Me, too! I have done something similar with the veggies...In addition to Olive Oil I have a mixture of herbs that I use and then I also add two or three drops of roasted sesame seed oil....adds a wonderful flavor. Haven't used water to steam them in probably 10 or 15 years...maybe more!

Sounds good, there really is no wrong way to eat/prepare broccoli, my favorite. BROCK-OH-LYE !!

Adding a pinch of baking soda to the water will keep it (or most any other vegetable---asparagus, green beans &c) green. (A pinch=maybe 1/4 teaspoon.) A pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar---also dissolved in the water---will help the flavor. To keep broccoli al dente cook it (covered with plastic wrap) not over 4 minutes per pound in a 1200W oven.

WOW ..Very interesting!!! I am curious who sponsored this article. The Big Pharma perhaps, losing their profits and in need of new patients?! How come Mr. Souza, an executive, does not know about side effects of using microwaves and how they deprive food from beneficial nutrients. Cardboard would be more healthy than a broccoli cooked in the microwave.

Or use a microwavable dish and place the broccoli in and microwave for 1 minute, place 1 tablespoon of margarine on top and sprinkle with a little garlic, then microwave for 2 minutes, delicious!

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]

The best way to have broccoli is to boil it, throw away the broccoli and drink water! All of the nutrients are still in the water. Microwave and steaming both rob the broccoli of some of its nutrients.

A decent cook could steam broccoli with a couple of ice cubes. You know...turning ice into fire.

What a great idea all the benefits of steaming plus the added affects of standing next to micro waves.

Also add a tablespoon of olive oil or oil to make the broccoli a bright green and to add to the flavor.

People should understand that eating broccoli is killing little immature trees and we need all the oxygen producers we can get. Please stop this heinous practice for the sake of the planet...PETB statement.

true. the broccoli massacre is a serious concern(started by g bush sr. during dessert storm) but please mention the Brussel sprout genocide that has been raging far longer. oh the humanity of it!
