So if he were a young white Huff Post would not have written about this. In fact more whites die at the hands of police than blacks. Huff Post how about going back to your Scum in the UK.

Since it is a Black person, should this be ignored? I am of the opinion that no matter who got jailed for $5 and held for months shows something is wrong with judges, DA's and governance. It is stupid knowing the costs to the public for such incompetence. The first meal in jail negates the $5. Since the officials in charge costed that much to the taxpayers, good as robing them for being paid to do such a messed up job, they need to be punished. Really, the worst is failing managers who allow a sick person to die in their custody, afterward the story is minimized as if there is an excuse, that is crazy.

what are they to do hold him down and force the medication which he refused into his body? Where do you draw the line for incarceration at what dollar figure?
He was a dirt bag and refused his medication. Oh well.

Why was he denied bail for such a petty crime?

He would not have been if he didn't have a history. Possibly outstanding warrants. Three strikes law. He was a dirt bag and he earned the lack of bail. Furthermore, if he intended to steal prior to entering the store that is burglary a felony. It is easy to prove. If he didn't have any money at all on him then he had no business in the store and so the theft becomes burglary due to prior intent. Three strikes if applicable here makes him a flight risk and bail would be denied. It's simple really. Failure to appear warrants would also result in denied bail as his warrants demonstrate he would not appear on his own.

Mitchell previously spent four months in the jail from April 2010, also on charges of petty larceny and trespassing, before being ordered released by the courts, according to Perry, the prison official.

She said Mitchell returned to the jail in January 2012, again on a petty larceny charge, before being released in May 2012 having spent a month in a state hospital.

P.S. He looks like such a nice boy. The one you could trust to carry groceries into the house for an elderly neighbor. Nah, probably not.

It's always easier to blame someone else, rather than accept responsibility for your own neglect of a family member.

Did they say he refused to eat or take his meds? And now his family wants answers
from who and for what? THEY are his family, THEY should have gotten him help
somewhere in the last 20 years or so. But NNOOOO! Now it's society's fault.
One good thing, Rev. Al Sharpton has much more free time now since his
highly rated and highest watched daily TV show, Politics Nation, was cancelled.
But don't despair you 8 viewers, his new time slot is at 8 am Sunday mornings. Albeit temporary.
510 Days until regime change. I don't think the Nation can survive 8 more
years of Hope & Change.

If he was on medication at the time he was jailed, then yes, the family was aware of his Mental Health problems, and so were his Jailers.
He was in the custody of law enforcement, and that means he was then their responsibility, from that point forward.

If he was schizophrenic and taking meds for it the staff should be aware that refusal to take meds is a symptom of schizophrenic behavior.

@miekele,

True. Many schizophrenics find that the treatment leaves them feeling worse off, than the disease itself.
They often complain that the meds leave them feeling dull, like walking zombies.

Why is it that the ONLY time it's politically correct to call an man"black" is when you're trying to make people FEEL SORRY

Gosh aOL, AP, Huggpost

Iif you are going to be balanced then when you include twitter racist quotes from black lives matter, note not lives matter, but racist black lives, then you SHOULD include quotes from groups like KKK and Aryan Nation in your stories.

also it is blatantly RACIST that comments on are turned on here for a story of a black guy in jail dead,

But your turned off comments at the story of the white deputy shot by the black thug.

You play, you pay. I agree, where was the family in getting him out of jail and getting him help AND following up on it? And the same well educated trash is now seeking indictments on the jail staff? How about you go to jail for a change! People do 26 years on death row because of a " my bad" excuses! Then you wonder why people get tired of people doing stupid stuff and point fingers and not take responsibility for their inept actions.

To continue:The initial description of the coward that shot the deputy in Houston was"a dark complexioned man"It was only AFTER the security camera footage was shown that it was obvious he was African-American!Case in point!!
