If his family even had Middle Class wealth, he wouldn't have been locked up for a day for this offense. His biggest crime was being poor. What kind of justice system locks a mentally ill man in jail for four months for the theft of a candy bar and lets Wall Street thieves who stole billions go free? It sounds like a page right out of "Les Miserables." Both the justice system and mental health system in this country are pathetic. How many lawsuits will it take before they are fixed?

Normally folks blame the parents and their upbringing as the cause of a child going astray. These parents got him help. If he didn't want to take his medication wasn't that on him? Do they have to handcuff him to a bed and force him to swallow the meds? Intravenous while strapped down? How many of those incarcerated also went on a hunger strike when entering the system in protest? We always need someone to blame. And yet $5 worth of items stolen and has been in jail since April?

obviously, he had an extensive criminal past, just wait and see

It is common for the mentally ill to be suspicious of medicine when it is given to them by someone they do not know. You seem to have never met a mentally ill person. I hope you never do.

So how many millions will his black estranged family members try to get AND GET they will because Sharpton and his cronies will help them to, while innocent white, asian, indian, etc. are victims of black crimes, victims of black doctors, victims of black racism against whites, get NOTHING!!!!!

Malarkey.
Most victims of black crime are black.
Black people get lower quality care from doctors because of subconscious prejudice and not the other way round.
Blacks suffer a lot more from racism be it in getting mortgages or jobs or even a taxi ride than you will ever know.
You should use more than one news source.

I'm starting lose it with AOL, they make it harder and harder to post an opinion that might upset someone. That's why we have opinions to debate and compare.

Why was bail denied? More to this story than being reported. You NEVER have bail denied for stealing unless you were armed or a threat to society. Something is not right about this reporting. It lacks so much information and AOL again is proven to not even be a media outlet that can be trusted.

I am a jailer! This is how we try and take care of the family members you cant or refuse to handle! This is sad. So you know, the Judge that denied him bail did so in order to allow this man help! Mental Health hospitals no longer exist and here is where our sick end up! SAD!!!!!!

You would think only black people die in jail in this country as that is all AOL, AP, Huffpost report.

Truth is that is BS, shies do, other races do they just can't be used to race bait like a black death can.

..should have been reported as a "dark complexion" man dies, just to keep it consistent. Must have been a typo by AOL...You know AOL---> the on line equivalent of dog excrement.

It's a hard, hard world for the mentally ill especially when dealing with the arrogant contemptuousness of the typical bureaucrat. I am sorry you had to die this way son.

I can only hope that the settlement the family will receive will in someway soften his dying

Stop being a thug, get a job, quit stealing, and you would be alive.

No he would be alive if his family would have gotten this man help! Judges deny bail for petty crime for one reason. That reason is when you need help and you have no one else!

I'll tell you what the problem was.. The family didn't want to deal with him or they would have bailed him out! I'm sure bail was no more than $50.00,, And now they probably want to benefit from his death by suing the City... Typical,,, LOSERS!!!

Then he had to be a habitual thief or they would have let him out.. Bail is always granted unless it's a Murder, Genius,,,

I don't defend the black thugs that get killed by cops, etc, but this is sad. He probably wasn't a punk black kid, just a hungry one who needed medical help. Very sad I think.

Now where was the family? Did any family visited him while he was in jail. Did the medic's inform the family that he refused to take his medication and refused to eat?
if you had a loved one in Jail that you knew had mental problem's and knew he had to take his medication. wouldn't you have gotten help a lot quicker. wouldn't you have gotten help from the Doctor that gave him his medication and the state agencies to help also. Now their family member has passed away and they have a lawyer!!!
because they may have neglected to get help quick for their loved one whom was in jail. You can't blame one side and it look's as though the family has and is.

He made a choice, theift is against the law and the amount doesn't really matter. Choices have consequences. He created the trap that cost him his life!

i don't know all the facts, but there is probably more to this story that what is being said, such as that maybe he reacted violently when confronted for his theft which is the real reason he was put in jail. (anything to make a headline right.) The point is stealing is wrong. If he refused to eat or take his medication and let himself die that was kind of his problem. It was obviously available to him and he refused. As far as being mentally ill, why did no one help him before he was put in jail? + He also had his chance in court for someone like a family member to speak up and say something on his behalf about his mental status and needs. It sounds like the situation was handled badly, if they knew he needed to be baby-sat someone should of been doing that i guess, but hes a full grown man who obviously was unattended living his life like a normal person when he decided to steal that snickers. Acted like a spoiled child in jail and died for it.
