All I can think of is all the stories we hear of people dying or having limbs amputated after contracting a bacteria from "wild waters". A newborn would be especially vulnerable.

Even a relatively short time ago child birth was considered quite dangerous, and death during child birth was fairly common. What's changed that? Medical science. This woman was lucky that nothing happened, coz any one of a number of potential complications could have left one or both of them dead. Congratulations love, you survived this round of Russian roulette.
