Growing up: Simone decided on her daughter’s first birthday, as a gift to her partner, to post the birth video on YouTube never expecting more than a few family members to see it - above, Perouze at three

Strong willed: Simone says Perouze has reached all of her milestones and has ambitions to be a rock star

A 43-year-old mother who gave birth to her fourth baby unaided in a stream has insisted she isn't 'hippy drippy' - as the footage of her labour has been watched by a staggering 52 million people.

Simone Thurber, 43, who now lives in Park City, Utah, says she has been shocked by the amount of attention her 22-minute-and-32-second long home video has attracted.

The graphic film initially shows the brunette labouring in and out of a bathtub set up in a garden before she heads down to a creek in the Australian Daintree Rainforest and finally gives birth without a midwife or doctor present.

Footage shows her naked and cowering on all fours, before a baby's head emerges.

Simone, who is trained doula and birthing therapist, is then seen pushing her daughter out as her partner, Nick, steps in to help.

After giving birth, she holds her newborn to her breast with the rest of her young daughters watching on.

Simone said she uploaded the video to YouTube to show people what it would be like to give birth in nature and she never expected the amount of attention it has received.

The mother-of-four added: 'After 50 people watched it I thought OMG my friends have seen me really naked, after 500 I was shocked.

'To know that more than 52 million people have taken the time to watch me having my now four-year-old daughter Perouze and to get messages from mums and dads thanking me for sharing this intimate birthing experience because it helped them feel less stressed or scared about their birth choice decisions is great.'

According to Simone she always wanted to have a baby in the wild which she knows to many people sounds extraordinary.

Explaining her train of thought, she said: 'I am not a hippy drippy mum but I wanted my fourth child to be born away from beeping machines and a hospital environment.

'Let’s face it women have been giving birth in the wild for thousands of years but the thought a modern women squatting in a creek and giving birth horrified many people even before I gave birth and shared the video.'

When Simone fell pregnant with her fourth child she discussed her dream of a birth in nature with her then partner Nick, who supported the idea.

The couple, who were living in Melbourne, Australia at the time, then went about finding the perfect location.

A friend of theirs offered them a house in the Daintree Rainforest area of Queensland and from there, they found a stream nearby.

Sadly the beach was not an option because of an infestation of jelly fish which is common along that area of Australian coastline.

The stream area was extremely dark, so in case of a night birth Simone and her partner installed a bathtub in the garden.

Simone went into labour at 11pm and was expecting it to be short.

However, she was still experiencing contractions at 9am and so she jumped in a car and headed to her 'dream' birthing location.

Two hours later squatting and naked in the stream Simone gave birth to her daughter who was named Perouze and is now four-and-a-half years old.

Recalling the chain of events, Simone said: 'I had brought a thin foam mat with me like the type used for yoga and when the baby’s head came out I naturally flicked onto my back but she was slightly stuck.

'Nick was filming and he gave the camera to our friend and gave her head and shoulders a nudge and she came out. I immediately grabbed her and put her on my chest.

'The sun was shining, we were in a creek and we had a new baby. It took another two hours to birth the placenta and when we got back to their friends house I ripped a piece off and I had a placenta smoothie.

'I suffered post-natal depression with all my births and this helped, I felt energised and awake. The whole experience felt empowering and freeing and our beautiful little girl was healthy and fine.”

According to Simone she then took the rest of the placenta and buried it by the stream – a tradition of Australia’s aboriginal or ‘original women’ as a way of giving back to the land.

Simone admits that her fourth pregnancy was harder than the others and giving birth in the wild draining but freeing.

She said: 'Doctors warned me as I was 39 it was a high risk pregnancy but I went with my gut. There was no doctor there and if something had gone wrong it would have been very difficult to get to hospital.

'However as a doula I knew the baby’s head was engaged and my body was telling me I had made the correct decision. Even now when I should Perouze the video or a friend or just watch it myself I am amazed.'

Simone decided on her daughter’s first birthday, as a gift to her partner, to post the birth video on YouTube never expecting more than a few family members to see it.

'I felt we had done something amazing and I wanted to share my birth with other women to show them anything is possible. Naturally I would not suggest you try this without talking to doctors and your doula or midwife but as a mum of 3 children already I felt it was the right decision.'

The decision to post the video as a birthday gift turned into the start of 52 million views.

Sadly Nick, the mother-of-four's partner at the time has died of cancer. She has now remarried and lives in Utah.

The video itself went on to inspire the U.S. TV series, Born in the Wild, but Simone had no involvement with the show.

Some viewers have criticized Simone for her unusual birthing location and uploading the video online.

However, the mother has defended her choice stating that Perouze has reached all of her milestones and has ambitions to be a rock star.

Simone concluded: 'She is an awesome little girl.

'I don’t normally tell people about the video on YouTube my new husband usually brings it up and it sparks debate.

'It was a very intimate moment for me and my daughter and I am proud of the how many people have seen the video and if it can help any pregnant mum then that makes me happy and every Mother’s Day I spend a moment watching it online and remembering that very special moment in the Australian rainforest.'

This is absolutely beautiful. Reading comments such as "way to pollute the wildlife drinking water" and "she invented a nasty method of childbirth" is ridiculous and I'm going to tell all you ignorants why. Humans are polluting our world EVERYDAY and yet none of you are taking actions to stop it. Why? Simply because you're all too obsessed with technologies, cars, jets and those are things most can not see this world without. What she did in her video was natural and beautiful. We are a part of the wildlife whether you like or not. Don't forget where is the people living today really came from and what our descents had done differently. We're just too caught up in this materialist judgement world to the point "Breast feeding in public" and "natural birth outdoors" have become disgusting and unacceptable. Please, go to your house if you want privacy because the moment you step outside, it's everyones' place. She did not invent this method of childbirth, it's been like this for years.[CN]

This is absolutely beautiful. Reading comments such as "way to pollute wildlife drinking water" and "nasty" "she invented a nasty childbirth" is just unacceptable. Do you ever think about other ways humans pollute the wild life our air and yet A LOT of people will not care to take some sort of action to stop it or even care enough for it bc everyone is too obsessed with jets, cars, technology and can not picture their lives without those things. So please, this is the least to be concerned about. We humans are naturally a part of the wild life and giving birth out doors being naked has been alive for SEVERAL MILLIONS YEARS. Everyone is just to be busy being caught up and stuck and this judgmental materialist world we've sadly created. No one is up for "natural birth" "breast feeding in public" etc bc we've simply become to cool for all that. This is not nasty, this is a part of who we are but is no longer accepted.[CN]

wonder would she have released the video should the baby have died during childbirth? and for her children to be walking around naked whilst she was in labour - disgusting. They don't need to be exposed to childbirth at such a young age.[CN]

So , just do it don't publicise you heaving great body pi$$ing out a baby . That is absolutely disgusting . I'm sure the baby is very cute and I know the super mummy clubs will be saying "oh but it's the most beautiful, natural thing on earth " ...yes maybe for the mother but Noone else wants to see that .[CN]

Its quiet common to not give birth in a hospital,,why should her birth choices be invalid because its not what you would do,,look at her job she knows the risks and pros and id do the same not the stream bit but the outside tub bit[CN]

How amazing is a woman's body? Wow so good to see this miracle. Well done indeed. As for the risk of infection, this does not exist here any more than in a hospital and probably less. She is a doula and very in touch with her body and what is happening. If there was any risk of complication she would not have made this choice. For the record hospital births do not always go well. Most births, however, either in or out of hospital do go well. Read the statistics. Learn about infections. Understand that powerful women are very in tune with what is happening during the birthing process. Besides, she probably had a back up plan anyway and would have gotten any help she needed if she saw a need arising. A relaxed mother without anxiety (which may be caused by hospital machines etc.) usually has a complication free birth. We can be grateful for modern medicine and many times it saves lives but there is no need to underestimate the power and wisdom of mother nature.[CN]

Oh, she posted it online for her partner. Why not give him in the privacy of their shack? This is a big f u to millions of women who die in childbirth because they have no hospital or professional care. And what would he have felt like if god forbid the baby had needed emergency care and died or suffered permanent damage from it.
