I am a frequent short haul flyer and always keep my seatbelt fastened. Just like to lower the odds...

As a former Air Controller and undestanding that planes can fly and do fly through a vacuum condition where their is no air, can drop 10k in seconds hurdling people head first into the upper ceiling, yes doing serious damage.I never take my seat belt off unless I need to go to the bathroom, and even then I hold on the back of each seat I pass to make sure I have something to hold onto. Period

You might be a former "air controller" but you know nothing about how the atmosphere works. There are no areas of vacuum, but there are areas where air is descending or rising, and these can cause planes to suddenly decent or climb.

I always keep my safety belt on loosely when flying. There's a good reason why they advise it

This is why we are advised to wear our seat belts at all times. It doesn't have to be tight or restrictive.

I don't fly anymore, but when I did, I always thought that everyone should continue to wear their seat beats during the flight. They walk around the thing like it's a hotel foyer, not a care in the world, in reality moving at 500-600 knots! Maybe the creatures need to strap in, unless they need the kaasi!

I've always kept my seat belt fastened.... too

Exactly why people should stay seated and wear your seatbelt. The Russians love to stand up, walk around, do random stuff during a flight....anything but follow the rules. If they had been seated and belted in, the outcome likely would have been less severe.

If you are on a flight longer than three or four hours, it is recommended you get up and walk. Especially if you are prone to blood clots and take blood thinner medication.

Yes, James, and when you sit down again it's recommended you belt up. Wise words you should heed in the air, and on the ground!!!!

If you wear your seatbelt you won't be thrown anywhere.

This is exactly why 'lap babies' shouldn't be a thing - the safest place for under 5's is buckled into a car seat that is safely secured to their chair. I recently cancelled a BA flight because they told me I would have to remove my son from his car seat during take off, landing and turbulence (ie most dangerous portions of the flight!) absolute madness!!!

Babies DO have they seat belts, they are attached to their mother;s seatbelts.

Babies shouldn't be on aircraft. They are ill equipped to deal with changing air pressure etc.

Good point.... the lengths parents have to go to secure babies in cars and yet airlines allow babies to travel on laps and not in a properly secured seat. It might save a few pounds but child safety should be paramount

Yes, N.H.. he can just meet his family when he's a teenager.. actually, he behaves better on flights than most adults!

Tatts - those things are illegal in every other country.. they're more dangerous to the baby than no belt! They just protect other passengers from a flying projectile (the baby) in the event of turbulence. I won't type it all here but if you have young kids I'd recommend researching the physics of those belts.

When seated keep your seat belt on for this very reason!

Old Cynic.
Airline pilots always warn passengers of turbulence so they should have all had seat belts on.!!

They do recommend that you keep them on at all times.

Please people, always buckle up on a flight, frequent flyers that know how quickly turbulence can hit wouldnt sit in their seat all flight without their strap done up - even on a short haul

Everyone laughs when I sit with my seatbelt on the whole flight, I hate flying and this would be my worst nightmare.

Don't think anyone would laugh at a seat belt, you're having a laugh surely.

I have no idea why people take their seatbelts off when seated. Turbulence and sudden drop in altitude can happen at any time without warning, so it should only ever be released when visiting the toilet.

It is always turbulent over the Andaman sea. Go to the loo before you start crossing it and remain in your seat with the belt secured.

Too right, Dan. In fact flying over any tropical ocean is always bumpy.

Seat belt sign off now means you can use the toilet or stretch your legs but always fasten up when sitting!

I keep my seatbelt on all through the flight unless I need the loo , just in case. This would put me off flying !
