A Boeing 777 plane suddenly got into the zone of strong turbulence before starting to descend

These were the chaotic scenes on board an Aeroflot plane as major turbulence threw passengers all over the cabin on a flight between Russia and Thailand.

At least 27 people - including three babies - suffered major injuries including suspected broken bones in the carnage which happened en route from Moscow to Bangkok.

Vladimir Sosnov, deputy head of Russian Consulate in Thailand, said: 'The injured suffered multiple fractures. There are both Russian and foreign citizens among them.'

He said: 'Apparently, those who were injured did not have their seat belts fastened.'

The plane - a Boeing 777 and packed with tourists - hit several successive areas of turbulence en route to Bangkok.

The flight crew kept control of the aircraft and the injured passengers were rushed to hospital on arrival in the Thai capital.

The plane - a Boeing 777 (file picture) and packed with tourists - hit several successive areas of turbulence en route to Bangkok

A source said 19 people were hospitalised in Bangkok, with two undergoing urgent surgery.

Others were treated with first aid after the incident on board flight SU 270.

A source told Interfax: 'A Boeing 777 plane suddenly got into the zone of strong turbulence before starting to descend.

'There had been no order to fasten seat belts at that moment.

'As a result, the plane was jolted by hundreds of metres, and some passengers were thrown into the space between the chairs suffering traumas.'

The Russian embassy is providing assistance to the injured passengers.

Aeroflot later said that none of the passengers suffered serious spinal injuries, despite earlier reports.

However, 17 remained in hospital with 'contusions' and 'fractured or broken bones'.

The airline agreed to pay all medical costs of the injured.

The airline said: 'An experienced crew piloted the flight.

'The pilot has more than 23 thousand flight hours, and the co-pilot has over 10,500 flight hours.

'However, the turbulence that hit the Boeing 777 was impossible to foresee.

'The incident was caused by what is known in aviation as 'clear-air turbulence'.

'Such turbulence occurs without any clouds, in clear skies with good visibility, and weather radar is unable to alert of its approach. In such situations, the crew is unable to warn passengers of the need to return to their seats.'

I agree. I always keep mine on when seated. The problem is it doesn't protect you from flying food and drinks from trolleys, baggage coming out from overhead lockers and other idiots who haven't fastened their seat belts landing on top of you.

Two things - always keep belted up unless going to the toilet, you can loosen the belt. Also, never fly with Russian or Chinese airlines when possible.
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
OMGReply toYou are always right
Agree with first thing but with the second, you are saying that if you fly with Russian or Chinese airlines you are more prone to turbulence. What a muppet!!! Glad we are leaving the German run EU!

Scotty MacReply toYou are always right
You are always right. I fly Chinese airlines all the time and the service is excellent and superior frequent flyer services and keep away from the likes of Lufthansa, BA, United and Qantas, there frequent flyer service is crap. People are always told to buckle up at all times. They would have been flying over the mountain ranges and summer monsoon winds. Good thing it was a Boeing 777, if it was Airbus it would have shocking. I have been on one such flight on Airbus in China, and air turbulence and wing design on Airbus is very bad and the food just served, was thrown all over the plane and they had use garbage banks to clean up the mess. All people where belted.

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
OMGReply toYou are always right
Joeyc - so you are agreeing that by flying Russian and Chinese airlines, you are more prone to turbulence. That is what his second comment is implying! I agree with Scotty Mac, some Chinese airlines have excellent service unlike Lufthansa and dare I add, United Airlines and American Airlines who I would never travel with again. With AA, I have booked a 4 flight trip with them once. All 4 flights were late and to cap it all, they lost our luggage too.
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
JoeycReply toYou are always right
Yes I am. You could have the best/newest aircraft, the prettiest/handsome staff/ The best food and drink, but if you have below average 'standard operating procedures' and below average training in the office, you will have incidents like this. There is alot more to it than just bad luck. You call out the likes of United Airlines etc, but they will have the best staff available in the US.
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
OMGReply toYou are always right
Unfortunately, the best in the US is nowhere near good enough when compared with the Rest of the World. If you look at the rankings for the top 100 airlines in the world. You will see United Airlines and AA near the bottom, way below some Chinese airlines and way below Aeroflot too. I have checked my facts. Maybe you need to check yours too.

My daughter works for Emirates and she says her biggest frustration on her flights are passengers who do not listen to advice given by Cabin crew especially regarding the wearing of seat belts. She got injured herself once insisting to a passenger to wear his belt as she was delayed getting to her jump seat !!

Take this L
I'm a flight attendant and I tell all my friends and loved ones, if they're sitting down, put on your seatbelt and keep it on. If the FA/ Flight Attendant advises passengers to put on seat belts and stay seated, do it....they aren't saying it for no reason. And women with children, ALWAYS keep them belted in. If its a newborn that is ticketed as a lap baby, hold your child close to your chest and lean over to protect it from flying out of your hands and hitting the ceiling. Not trying to offend anyone, it's just my caring advice to all of you.
