I can't believe some people are saying children shouldnt be on planes. They are equally entitled to travel, go on holidays and have fun with their families just like adults. People complain about the oppression of women by other religions, but dont realise that they are prejudice and oppressive too. Should babies and children be banned from buses and trains too? Why is the world so mean hearted and selfish. Anyway hope everyone is ok.

Of course children should be on airplanes but parents should ensure they are in their seat at all times with their seat belts securely fastened. Children so often left running up and down the aisles easy to be thrown around like rag dolls whenever turbulence hits. Selfish parents and very lax cabin staff generally.

Of course children should be allowed on planes but they should be in the hold.

Of course children should travel, but many parents make no attempt to contain them or control them. And some cabin crew are reluctant to intervene for fear of complaints. This is why children can be an increasing nuisance on planes and there is much to be said for having a separate area for families.

And this is why strapping in during flights is important. It's explained before take off - but for the idiots around you, reading magazines and newspapers during the safety briefing is so much more important.

That's because we already know it's important to wear seat belts.

Bit harsh on frequent flyers...

I am a frequent flyer - gold card holder on Emirates. I can still spare 60 seconds listening to a briefing that may save my life.

That's what happens when you ignore the advice the cabin crew give you. It is ridiculous that the amount of hand luggage people are allowed is not more strictly enforced.

Many years back I was on a jumbo over the South China Sea, everything was calm and appeared to be fine, all of a sudden the plane just fell out of the sky! It was like those scenes you see in space films with people and food trays floating around the cabin. I hit my head on the ceiling and my food tray and glass of wine ended up on an elderly priest in front of me. A large piece of machinery (possibly to do with the aircon) broke away from the ceiling and landed on an empty seat nearby, had anyone been sat there, they would have been badly injured or worse! When the plane hit the bottom of the air pocket it felt like it was hitting the ground, everyone thought the thing would break apart. I wouldn't fly Aeroflot but it can happen to anyone.

Clear air turbulence the pilot's worst nightmare!

Caused by a lack of common sense. When you are in your seat, keep your seatbelt on. Simples.

Agreed, my belt stays fastened too. I loosen it slightly when the belt sign goes of but tighten it again if flight crew warn of turbulence/the belt light come on during the flight and make sure it's tight when landing.

What really bugs me is the parents who let their kids run up and down the aisles. Serious accidents waiting to happen!!

Turbulence "pockets" are unexpected and sudden. Which is why you are advised to wear your seatbelt at all times. Very bad luck for those who just happened to be waiting to use the lavatory or going up the aisle to stretch their legs. It's a good idea to pay attention to leg exercises that can be done whilst seated for this reason....better than doing nothing.

Why do people not wear seat Belts?? I have seen first hand how dangerous turbulence is and now wear my seatbelt at all times!

I have never experienced bad turbulence whilst flying but after reading this article it makes me wonder why the seatbelt signs are switched off at all.. I will be keeping my belt on myself and my children on all future flights where possible . I wish these people a speedy recovery !

I was in Bangkok a few weeks ago, never suffered this turbulence. I fly EK. Wonder if this is pilot error? By the way, 1/3 of immigration were Brits, popular destination.

Because flights can be long, uncomfortable and this event, although scary to some people, is very very rare. Perhaps we should all wear the life jackets, in case?

Turbulence happens, it's like when a gust of wind lifts up your skirt, girlie. Did you predict it?

More people walk around planes nowadays because the gap between seats in tiny and people cannot sit like that for too long.

It's recommended to walk to prevent DVT.

This is one good reason to make seat belt wearing compulsory during a flight. So unless one is heading to the bathroom, buckle up should be the motto.

Oddly enough, these stories always reassure me about flight. If turbulence is severe enough to do all of that sort of damage, but the plane still lands just fine, I don't see the need to fear the bumps you hit on nearly every flight.

When will people learn that the best way to travel is in your seat with the seat belts fastened but loosened so that if the plane suddenly drops you are held down. By not doing this I know of at least one case where a man was killed when the plane suddenly dropped and he came up out of his seat, hit his head on the luggage rack and broke his neck.

Difficult when you are going to the toilet and it doesnt stop you hitting the seat in front with your face
