The Treasury should replace Jackson with the Bison, on the $20 bill.

Thank you Sen. Hoeven. I grew up in Devils Lake, have fond memories of many of the people at Fort Totten and am grateful for this bill.

I like buffalo, they taste really good.

So the bald eagle's no longer the national animal or is this something else? I mean I have no objection to making the bison our national animal, just wondering about the bald eagle. that's all.

National 'mammal', not symbol.

If a Bald Eagle was a mammal, we'd have ourselves a twofer.

The Bald Eagle is our national symbol. The bison will be the national mammal. Birds are not mammals. Mammals do not lay eggs.

Connor, please read again.

The bald eagle is the national bird. The national mammal will be bison. Next up: national insect. Cockroach?

No, not bison. Instead adopt the Bigfoot (Sasquatch) as America's national mammal.

I hear that hunters can shoot these when they are tied up in a field. If so, it should be illegal.

Wow, you mean we finally got a bill passed by Congress that Obama will not veto? Oh, that's right, it was a bill introduced by a Democrat Rep.

Finally? Obama has only vetoed 8 bills. What a moronic statement.

Really, why do we put up with our politicians who waste time on things like this? People you need to start voting in independents and third party people at the local level. Eventually you will then be able to vote them into national office and maybe we can get rid of these imbeciles we have that are supposed to represent us and waste their very limited time at work dealing with THIS nonsense.

This sounds like a plan to put Michele Obama’s picture back on a nickel.

Good. We celebrate the killing of millions of Bison by the ''white man'' as he blamed it on the spiritful Indians.

This was the rational behind cattle grazing...cattle get along with land and highways much better than bison which roam far and wide jump fences and love to smash up cars for fun. Plus cattle are delicious and farm friendly. There is a place for Bison...National Parks and wide open spaces.

You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd.

But you can be happy if you've a mind to.

Great. Now, along with this Act, Congress should also pass the National Indigenous Native American Legacy Act. The irony is so thick, you could could cut it with a broken arrow!

When bison take care of the electricity, water, and trash disposal, they're paying the Buffalo bills.

Lets hope he doesn't politicize this and refuse to sign. It should be relatively simple, even for him.

I was wondering how the frothing at the mouth cons would turn this against. Congratulations! You managed to do it in the most stupid way possible!

Not only are they a symbol of America, they're tasty!

While they are at it. I believe English has earned the right to be our official language. A common language is one of the most important human resources a country like ours can have, and it's circling the drain in some parts of the country.

Americans speak over 100 foreign languages. We can always share each other's cuisine, music, the arts, etc., but without a common language, we can't easily share each other's thoughts and ideas. And that's what allowed the United States to become one, indivisible nation.

Second languages are wonderful and having a variety of second languages would allow people to get in touch with their own heritage and promote the U.S. in today's ever changing, global society. For everybody to make their own choice, we need one, common language for government and public discourse. We should not have to learn somebody else's foreign language merely to accommodate other Americans who don't use English. We don't want language barriers to dictate where Americans can live and work in their own country.

It's time to make English official...while we still can, and phase out non-emergency bilingual government!

The official language in the US is American English it just is not enforced for #$%$.

KeithReply totssr

I'll go you one better. The Official language should be American, as English applies to a link with the UK. The Brits, Scots, and Irish still require Americans to take an English test for medical licenses, despite the common language. Then we can test their American language skills when they apply for an American medical license! Remember we put our luggage in the trunk NOT the boot.

Mike,

The US does NOT have an official language. Otherwise US English wouldn't still be in existence pushing for it to be designated as such.

BenjaminReply totssr

Keith,

Do you mean American English? American could be used to identify any of the American Indian languages still in existence.

@mike -- The United States does not have a national official language; nevertheless, English (specifically American English) is the primary language used for legislation, regulations, executive orders, treaties, federal court rulings, and all other official pronouncements; although there are laws requiring documents

English and French are already the two international languages, what more do you want ?

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
tssrReply totssr

Richard, we do want more. When immigrants come to the U.S. legally, learn English for the citizenship exam and to communicate with their new, fellow Americans, apply for a very ordinary position at their public library or post office or other government office and are told that they won't even be interviewed because they don't speak Spanish...well, it just doesn't seem quite right.

Second languages are great, but the language should always be a personal choice in a country as multi-ethnic as the U.S.. Our second languages are just as important to us as Spanish is to Latinos. And while Spanish may be a lovely language, not everybody has the time or desire to learn it.

Ordinary positions in our own government, with the obvious exceptions, should be open to all American citizens no matter what their second language might be...or even if they have no second language. That's one of the advantages of having a common language.
