A candid shot of a German prisoner of war in Weywertz, Belgium. 730,000 Germans were held in Northern Europe by Allied forces in 1944 although that number grew to 6.6million at the end of 1945, according to German estimates. 'D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, and the heroic men who fought back German forces are all hugely important stories in our history,' said Enos.[CN]

US Army soldiers use a jeep to move a Very Low Altitude (VLA) antiaircraft balloon  during a training exercise in southern England before D-Day, circa May 1944. Blimps were used to defend against dive bombers by blocking their path to fighter jets which in turn forced enemy planes to fly higher which put them in the range of anti-aircraft fire

Striking color pictures have brought the struggle and victory of the Second World War's Western Front into the twenty-first century.

The images from June 1944 show USS LST-388 landing at Normandy Beach, US Army forces making a desperate bid to fight German forces on Utah Beach and marching through Po Valley.

Other amazing shots from under a year later show members of America's E-Company celebrating victory over the Nazis in Hitler's private residence in the Bavarian mountains as well as France during Liberation Day.

The wartime photographs were colorized by American emergency medical technician Jared Enos, 19, from North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

'Some of the most famous, inspiring, and harrowing stories come from the Western Front,' he said.

'I really wanted to capture the people in this collection, to allow you to glimpse into the past and think, 'What could have been going through their mind at a moment like this.'

The Battle of Britain was fought through the summer months of 1940. The US entered the war after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. Manned by volunteers from the US, there were three Eagle Squadrons within the RAF until late 1942 when these squadrons were formally handed over to the USAAF. A small number of US volunteers flew and fought in the RAF during the Battle of Britain.[CN]

Don't read much eh?The truth of the matter is that we both desperately needed each other. America could not have landed on the European continent by its self without taking enormous casualties, and like wise for Britain. And the U.S. strategic bombing campaign would have never happened without British bases. And America wouldn't have had the access to critical intelligence information that Britain provided through the Ultra intercepts. The U.S.Armys Ranger battalions that spearheaded the landings wouldn't have existed had Churchill not invented the British Commandos first.A huge part of the U.S.Navy was tied up fighting the Japanese in the Pacific,so where would we have been on D Day without the Royal Navy? And what about the Manhattan project? Are you aware that there were British scientist who helped with the development of the Atomic bomb?[CN]

Britain saved itself in the Battle of Britain (summer/autumn 1940). After numerous attacks AH thought he could conquer but Britain beat them back every time and AH conceded, resulting in the war taking on a new path to the Eastern Front. Britain could have rested on its laurels in Autumn ('Fall') 1940 with a 'I'm alright, Jack' attitude but no, it licked its fresh battle wounds, stood up in the face of evil adversity and said 'No more!' as it bravely went to help its fellow man in dire need, deep into the mouth of he|| for another two years and countless pleads of help from allied countries, some helped and some, as you probably know, didn't. Don't forget, two years is a long time, especially when things are miserable.[CN]

The U.S. forces performed poorly on D-Day. The U.S. paratroopers achieved nothing. They spent the hours of darkness hiding from the Germans or wandering about looking for other paratroopers. For what good they achieved they might as well have landed on the beaches with the land forces. The British and Canadian airborne troops achieved all their objectives in brilliant fashion. The near-disaster at Omaha was entirely the fault of the Americans themselves. They failed to bomb the beach and failed to rocket the German defenders. 14,000 rockets fell uselessly short of the beach because the commander of the rocket ships didn't have the courage to come in close enough. Hollywood never shows this of course.

The truth is the British expeditionary force under Lord Gort was chased off the continent in a few weeks after action started. The British set up units to deny access to the evacuation ships to their allies the French and only allowed the French aboard after the Government made a formal complaint. Lord Gort the British commander had layer plans to flee without informing his allies the Belgians and French. The French 1st Army was fighting a valiant rear guard action as the Brits fled leaving behind to the Germans most of their weapons and thousands of tons of supplies. One reporter later noted that entire regiments of Brits could be seen marching with, but a single rifle in Britain after Dunkirk. Churchill warned the British press not to make Dunkirk sound like some sort of victory, but the did anyway.

Americans. Don't listen to the moaners. They don't represent the views and gratitude of ALL allies. Sure there were differences, but it was won in the end. Everybody needed everybody and everyone provided the tipping point as a unit together. The only reason why us Brits get grumpy is because Europeans hate us and never acknowledge any nation except the ones they want to suck up to for present day relations. The Americans. That's all. But it's also wrong for Americans to think they won the war. The A bomb was not your technology. You just had the balls to drop one on Japan.

Without that the war would have surely been lost.

The so-called Native Americans were also im mig rants - they came from Asia. Also they were always fighting each other - but the Wh ites brought that to an end.

jlflibertyReply toFree the world 00
And the native Americans fought between each others tribes and took each others lands long before Europeans arrived. They need to all figure out who had it first and give it back, right? After that we need to figure out which cave men and woman held the land and etc... etc... .... right? .

There is no such thing as a Native American because even they migrated to America.

The Americans did little in Normandy. The British and Canadians took on the best infantry and armoured divisions - often SS - that the Germans had. The Americans were supposed to break out of Normandy while the British and Canadians pinned down and destroyed Rommel's armies and reserves. Although only weak German forces held the U.S. army back Bradley and Patton repeatedly refused to move, saying they weren't ready. Montgomery had to launch new offensives to keep the Germans engaged and to wear them down. When the so-called 'breakout' finally came it was thanks to Monty not Patton. Normandy was the greatest allied victory of WW2 and it was a British/Canadian victory.

Over 2,000 dead Americans who did nothing. OK...
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
Winston X ChurchillReply toWinston X Churchill
@ marilu: The near-disaster at Omaha was entirely the fault of the Americans themselves. They failed to bomb the beach and failed to rocket the German defenders. 14,000 rockets fell uselessly short of the beach because the commander of the rocket ships didn't have the courage to come in close enough. Hollywood never shows this of course.

Monty could get out of his way fast enough! He killed more of his troops because he was too cautious.

Oh yes, what a great British/Canadian victory. Victorious with the help of 1000s of Americans who came in to help and died for you! Go talk to any locals of Normandy who lived through the war on the beaches and ask them what they remember most and experienced - unfortunately, few are still with us today but I¿m sure there¿s one or two who are less senile than you!

Hey, since you are a military genius, explain know the Brits got crushed at Singapore and Hong Kong by the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy (remember the destruction of HMS ''prince of' wales'' and the HMS ''repulse''? You could have used a General Patton instead of the arrogant snobs that led thousands of brave 'Tommies' and 'Aussies' to deaths in miserable pow camps! You are exceedingly ignorant.

USAisNumberOne. Well, your moniker obviously doesn't refer to grammar or spelling. There is no such thing as speaking 'British'. It's speaking 'English'...the same language our over 2000 year old civiisation gifted you, and the very thing most of you have spend the last 200+ years butchering. As for the dead solders, airman and sailors. Yes, the highest respect for their sacrifice. Too bad you have allowed your country to reduce itself to an illiterate welfare state ever since. I think they would be appalled at what has become of your nation.

Dave from Cambridge====>Didn't your teachers ever tell you about the London bombing raids? It was Germany who started that war. Didn't you ever listen to the Churchill speeches to keep British morale up? The USA is ALLIES with the UK and much of Europe. That means we're FRIENDS....."There is no greater love than a man who will give his life for a friend." (quote from J.C. the Greatest Friend of all) The world is dangerous, we need to stand up and support each other -- not cower under our beds and cut each other down with worthless words.

Wow really? You expect something for nothing? Not a "Thank you" for advancing all those supplies and equipment, that did not grow on trees over here. Workers had to be paid, raw materials used, iron and steel had to be melted, casted and formed into whichever form required, those raw materials and labor force had to be paid for by us. In case you didn't know, Americans at the time were also forced to live on rations they weren't 'living high on the hog' whilst sending overseas their leftovers to the people of the UK. You ingrate.

The hypocrisy is unbelievable. the U.S. is damned if we do, damned if we don't. You do know that the conflict began as a European war, (same as WWI), until Japan attacked us. Your country and France declared war on Germany after it invaded Poland in Sept. of 1939 (the Soviets also invaded Poland too, but you two didn't declare war on them, funny that eh?), we lost a lot of brave men, from our fly-boys, carrying out the only strategic daylight bombings, to our sailors, marines and soldiers. What did the soviets give you? You do realize we also were giving land lease equipment to Russia too don't you? I guess you would've liked it if we gave you nothing and instead concentrated on Japan, the only country during that time that started hostilities towards us? Red arrow all you want, there's nothing false in what I said, it's just sour grapes.

By the grace of the American involvement in the war, you live in a free country that survived to pay the debt. Brave men and woman from the losing side also sacrificed. Had the U.S. not initiated a lend-lease program for both Russia and Britain, and had the U.S. not entered the war, Britain would have lost the war.
