And to think the US had the cheek to ask our government at the time to pay them to get involved collectively save the world from ghastly evil. That sums up the offensive mentality of those from the US. But I'm not surprised considering during the US c!.vil w@r and this w@.r too, they had b'L''@'ck.s fighting for our white freedom yet they were not free from the evil of the US whites!!Dart69Reply toJames_2016
That nonsense of course. The fact is Republicans in congress didn't want to help you at all. FDR wanted to supply the UK after they v were out of money? Republican in congress argued v that v to give the UK weapons and supplies on credit would violate our nuetralty. Search for vote on "Lend Lease" Republicans voted overwhelmingly against it. The US loaned Britain money t 2 percent the exact same interest rate Canada loaned them money.James_2016Reply toJames_2016
They only got involved because WE had to give an incentive....MONEY. If you're saving the world you do so based on altruism and not place monetary conditions to it. We have only recently finished paying the US back ....all thanks to OUR boys and girls altruism!!!Feddup
Why are no BRITISH, CANADIAN or POLISH troops shown? Didn't they fight in Italy and France too? Does the USA think it won the European War on it's own?MFLReply toFeddup
Because the photos were taken by official photographers of the US Army. They were only in areas under US control. The person who did the colouring is a US citizen and would only access US photos - if he was asked (or tasked) he would do the same for other nations. The British and Canadians had their own photographers.JammaTReply torobert powers
You Americans did NOTHING from 1939-41 while the Na.zis rampaged throughout Europe. You sat back and watched the horrors. Only when Japan kicked your butt did you bother to get up and get involved. You had to be dragged into the war kicking and screaming. We don't forget.mountaingrlReply torobert powers
The United States had a policy not to get involved in any war unless US was directly threatened. Our military was in shambles after WWI. Few soldiers, barely any equipment, and a population that did not want war again. If the US had entered earlier it could have been much worse. Roosevelt kept his promise to the American people. Then the attack at Pearl Harbor happened and the rest you know.Wkcf
But for the Americans this would never have happened funny how the Victor's always rewrite the history to glorify themselvesColdzeroReply toWkcf
Did Ireland do much? No? Best be quiet to be honest......you are up there with the Swiss on that so perhaps it's best you don't embarrass yourself mate. A few brave Irish men fought for the allies but were rejected by their countrymen on return....to them I have the utmost respect....for everyone else I have more respect towards the Germans than anyone that sits on the fence hoping that Britain might lose. We didn't by the way ;)Biffa
Great photos showing America winning the war again, surely Hollywood's done a good enough job of that already?Hugh MonReply toBiffa
WWII may well not have been won w/o the second front. Brits didn't have the resources or resolve to open it on their own & preferred peripheral engagement/containment. So... in a way, yes. The same could certainly be said about the enormous human sacrifices the Soviets contributed in the East, but we still aren't all that keen on giving the Ruskies credit for anything.LeFrench
Why don't we never see photos of Russians during this war? You know the true liberators of Europe who won the war in 1943.Winston X Churchill
Patton was a bully whose style of leadership was to scream and shout at his staff using foul language. Then he would disappear while his cowed and humiliated staff did the planning and organisational work. Patton would then claim the credit for whatever success was achieved. In 'A Genius For War', Patton's biography by Carlo D'este, D'este states that the only Allied general Patton admired was Montgomery.Fool on the hill
As always, there is not a British or Canadian soldier to be seen, even though their numbers were far greater. It is this clap trap, helped by ignorant staff reporters that helps to perpetuate the Hollywood myth that the Americans invaded Normandy and swept through France and Germany without any help from anyone. If the reporter took the time to learn a little about WW2 history, they may find the truth is considerably different, and this is an insult to the thousands of commonwealth soldiers who were there.Corn FedReply toFool on the hill
If you took the time to read the article you'd find that it's a 19 year old American who does this work so it should come as zero shock the pictures contain Americans. No one is stopping you from doing the same. And honestly, I would love to see them once you're finished. I'm sure they'll be great.matj50
more like russia did the grunt work ( held off 70 percent) and allowed the british and americans run wild in the western front and the french were being french . is that alright for the butt hurt english folks hereericjimbob
These are US photos. Don't you have any UK ones, we were fighting a lot longer than them ?JammaTReply toericjimbob
Yes. the Americans did NOTHING from 1939-41 while the Na.zis rampaged throughout Europe. They sat back and watched the horrors. JammaT, yea, you seem to forget that if it weren't for the US, you wouldn't have had any supplies or weapons. Otherwise, you'd be speaking German right now. Besides, The US Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin secured "peace for our time." Oh wait, that was YOUR Prime Minister making a deal with the devil!DaveReply toericjimbob
You people from Europe stated WWII, Neville Chamberland gave the Germans everything they demanded. Germany was not stopped while they advanced thru Europe. Blame your politicians for the war and not stopping it in the bud. America supplied England with much needed supplies, many American Merchant Marine ships were sunk by the Germans while brining supplies to Europe. Wake up and smell the roses. I hope you don't forget who aided Europe in bringing the war to an endLinda SkinnerReply toericjimbob
I was certainly raised to honor our American soldiers of WWII, which included my Dad, all of my uncles, all of my older male in-laws, etc. But as I have learned much more about the war over my lifetime, I have really come to admire the British. You must be the toughest people on the planet to have survived the bombings at home the way you did, and to keep going. The British really are amazing people.Hereward the wake
There were more British than yanks on the D day beaches yet you would not think so from this article and photos.PeterReply toHereward the wake
It's an American kid who colorized the photos so he has probably obtained them from American relatives and ergo they are mostly of American troops. However while there may have been more British on the beaches of Normandy it was the American forces that did most of the liberatingColdzeroReply toHereward the wake
@Peter. Yes of course the Americans did some hard fighting and we will always be grateful to them. But the opposition on Gold, Sword and Juno beaches were in fact superior to what they were on Omaha and Utah beaches. The aforementioned beaches were made up of mainly SS units and Grenadier battalions. Whereas Omaha were mainly conscripts and older/younger fighters. The problem for you guys was you took the wrong equipment to storm a beach and turned down the equipment offered by the British otherwise known as the "funnies". Your tanks mainly didn't make it on the beach and you guys were sitting ducks. Utah your Rangers pulled off an amazing feat though with scaling those cliffs albeit the guns they were storming had been moved. Everyone that day did an amazing job, but it must not be downplayed the role the British and commonwealth troops played in it.webfootReply tomrgreenwhiteandgold
I have no doubt that British archives are loaded with amazing photos from WW2 - I'd love to see those colorized also. In this era of clueless and mis-educated millenials driving Western Civilization to extinction, a realistic glimpse into a past era when people understood the need to defend and protect their own cultures might be very useful.Wordsworthbloke

Many feel the same way... However, Germany would have been on your doorstep for many years. To save the UK, we all had to save France. Europe would not be what it is today. I suspect France will blow it again considering the "other" issue they have now with head choppers.DuncannyReply tohurley buffini
These were all brave honorable young men but if we are going to stick to historical facts then clearly we can see that American's suffered almost 2 times the men of any of the other nations that day. Please don't get me wrong 1 life lost was horrendous and these young men deserve nothing but respect but it seems your statement tried to downplay our role in the landings...6,603 Americans mothers received word later in the days following of their sons deaths as well as did 3,646 English and Canadian mothers as well.
