The Greatest Generation! If millennials were ever tasked with a mission like this, the battle would be lost before it was ever fought.

Did the French ever thank us?

De Gaulle did his best to keep us out of the Common Market.Their farmers have survived since then due to EU handouts quite largely funded from our EU 'subscriptions.Having let thousands of migrants into France they now want to dump them all on us. What more do you want, or perhaps even expect from the French.

The French have no honour, so why expect it ? They relied on the UK, the Commonwealth, and the US to die for them. We kicked the Germans out of France, where they were being entertained and lavished - especially by the Vichy backstabbers.

They wouldn't even fund the fight back for their own country, hiding their wealth in Canada for the rebuild.

When the Germans capitulated in Paris a Victory parade was planned, De Gaulle told the British to go a do one... Fact that was on the history channel.

There are French families that still voluntarily care for the graves of US soldiers in Normandy.

I don't like looking at old pictures. It make me sad to think all the soldiers and civilians in the photos are gone due to war or old age. All gone just like that.

More Americans have been killed by gun murders in the US than those killed in WW2. Now THAT is sad !!!

I trained national servicemen in ground combat during the fifties. Today I celebrate my 83rd birthday. It is not fair to underestimate the present generation. Weapons and techniques may have changed, but I am sure, if push comes to shove, with proper training in military skills, the present generation will respond to the challenge.

Sadly, you are mistaken. The freedoms earned by your generation are taken for granted by the current generation who think the world owes them a living.

Don't judge an entire nation by the millennial city dwellers. There are still an awful lot of young men capable of representing their nation on a battlefield.

Who do you think have been fighting in places like Afghanistan? Old-age pensioners?

And most of those in WW II werent 'asked', they were told. Todays youth makes up the bulk of our armed forces and they are all, essentially, volunteers.

And after all that, all those surviving men just went back to their old lives as best they could. Worth remembering whilst the Japanese Americans were fighting, their families were in Internment camps. Great photos.

Amazing pictures! For the record of the small minded people on here. Neither the U.S. or Great Britain won the war alone. It is never spoken of or taught in schools but it really was a World War. Almost every country in the world declared war on either Germany or Japan. Look it up it is quite interesting to read about units from countries you would never associate with WWII.

Just imagine what the world would be like if we made the same technological advancements and innovations during times of peace that were made during WWII.Germany was a powerhouse of engineering there's no denying that no matter which side you were on.

Not as much of a powerhouse of engineering as the UK and the USA were.
