The stark decline is revealed in the report Contemporary Catholicism in England and Wales, written by Stephen Bullivant of St Mary’s Catholic University in Twickenham, south west London.

The document, which will be launched at the House of Commons today, says that both the Anglican and Catholic churches are struggling to retain people brought up as Christians.

The Church of England expects attendance to continue to fall for another 30 years as its congregations age and younger generations shun faith.

Christian churches are also struggling to obtain new recruits from atheist or agnostic backgrounds.

The vast majority of converts to faith come from other Christian denominations, rather than non-Christians or people identifying as having no religion.

According to the report, four out of ten adults raised as Anglican – and a similar number of those raised Catholic - now identify as having no religion.

London is the country’s most religious area, in terms of having the smallest proportion of people identifying as ‘nones’ at 40%.

While in Wales, almost 60% of people say they have no religion.

Speaking to The Guardian, Mr Bullivant, a senior lecturer in theology and ethics, said: ‘The striking thing is the clear sense of the growth of ‘no religion’ as a proportion of the population.

‘The main driver is people who were brought up with some religion now saying they have no religion.

‘What we’re seeing is an acceleration in the numbers of people not only not practising their faith on a regular basis, but not even ticking the box.

‘The reason for that is the big question in the sociology of religion.’

In preparing the study, Mr Bullivant analysed data collected through British Social Attitudes surveys over 30 years.

Northern Ireland, which has long been the most religious part of the UK, was not included in the data. In 2011, just 7% said they belonged to a non-Christian religion or no religion.

Scotland was also omitted from the survey, but last month a separate report found 52% of the population said they were ‘nones’, compared with 40% in 1999.

Thirty years ago in England and Wales, 44.5% of the population described themselves as Anglican – a figure which had fallen to 19% by 2014.

A spokesman for the Church of England told The Guardian: ‘We do not have an increasingly secular society as much as a more agnostic one.‘

Just how gullible, weak-minded and deluded can people be, to get taken in by one of the many god delusions? The fact that some people still cling to religion only reveals how woeful our education system is, as anyone with a good education comes to understand that religion has nothing to do with truth and everything to do with manipulation and deceit, yet pretends to be good. How sad, that some people are still taken in by this ancient scam.[CN]

I'm not a religious person so this doesn't shock or surprise me, I've seen many churches fall into disrepair and close down due to dwindling attendances and lack of belief in their faith, the real issue here though is the dramatic and never ceasing rise in people who share a faith that has absolutely no compatability with the ways of a modern, civilised, western society, a faith that encourages medieval practices and laws..a faith that is intolerant of others..[CN]

I'm not religious personally as I don't believe and clearly the harm it causes is ridiculous, however I have sat back and questioned whether I should become Christian purely to back our corner, much like when it comes to a fight you must pick a side. Why? Well, when the others push more and more of their beliefs, changing our laws, culture and countries as they go how are we supposed to be offended and fight back if we ourselves do not believe/ care? I see it getting to this stage and it concerns me... It's either a stupid idea to boost Christianity in such a way or in fact quite a necessary move and I really can't decide which. Which would you rather find in your road a beautiful quiet church or a noisy mosquito?

Where do you get the idea that morality in decline. Oh yes. You're a DM reader.

Aaron---why do you think "morality" is in decline? Is it because of all the harm you see in the world? Well that would be an argument if the world was perfect BEFORE this decline in Christianity-and quite clearly the world has never been perfect and it could be easily argued that much is better now. Slavery is illegal, FGM (practised by Christians as well as other faiths) is illegal, child exploitation is illegal, the poor in the uk no longer starve, children are no longer thrown in jail because thier parents are poor--the list goes on and on. But some people, for some reason, think that the world was better at some undefined point in the past. Life is better noiw and I am glad that religion is falling away.

Before politicians were invented, people who wished to control other people , appealed to their superstitious nature and told them what they should do and the benefits of so doing. No difference from our politicians and political parties today. Some people were swayed by what one religious leader said and so joined that party. and others were swayed by a different party. Fortunately there are a great many of us who do not need the threat of hell & gods vengeance to make us treat others as we'd like to be treated. For THOSE people it's just common sense, don't need religion to enforce it.

I know one thing. The World would be a much safer place if religion did not exist.

You lot that disagree are, frankly, deluded. BILLIONS have died because of it. It is a FACT.

Unfortunately this is why the control of our country is slipping away as our national identity and culture is being eroded.

Why is that. The news article states half the UK are now atheist and 43% are Christians.

This article has nothing to do with the "other faith"

France is right, religion is a private matter and should not be part of the state.

I'm always a bit amused (and saddened) when folks dismiss God who have never read the Bible or studied the faith. Believers were NEVER promised no injustice/tragedy/loss. Indeed it was clearly written rain will fall on the just and unjust alike. That evil can prevail on earth. The promise of God/Christianity is those who know and trust in God will never walk thru misery alone. Peace and comfort WILL be provided and..in the end, all will be well. No money bribes or good works required (Tho moral behavior is expected.) , this life is a blink of an eye compared w eternity and Heaven is promised for those who trust. As a practicing Christian whose daughter died, whose 38 year old husband stricken w cancer I absolutely was comforted thru the hideous pain. It never occurred to me I would escape pain in this life just because I'm a Christian; just that I wouldn't be alone, God promised comforting measures (He delivered), there WOULD be joy. People have such a poor understanding of God/faith.

Why do you assume people that dismiss god have never read the bible (good stories but I preferred aesops fables) or studied the faith? I'm glad you've found comfort in your religion but some of us don't need that. I know that if my husband died I'd find the same comfort in my family & friends, the church just isn't necessary for that. Do you really think that if you weren't religious that comfort wouldn't be there, that after you lost your daughter people would have turned their backs? That's really sad & shows an alarming lack of FAITH in other human beings. You see you're saying people HAVE to have religion in order to be good people & there is proof to the contrary everywhere you look. I have had misery in my life & the comfort I got from others, other non believers, came from THEM, not from a sense of religious duty.

I have read the bible, it's the primary reason I'm an atheist.
