Who is going to question him in a thousand years if he is wrong? Where is the proof to back up his theory? Who is paying him to say that? More global warming crap.

Our nearest star, Alpha Proxima, is at a distance of 4.2 light years from Earth. At space shuttle speeds it will take 170,000 years to get there and it does not have an exo-planet in the habitable zone.Shut up Hawkins, you are out of touch and distracting people from solving the real problems we need to solve here on Earth.

Hawkins knows far more about the topic then you do, you just know that you won't be around when this becomes an issue, just a selfish simpleton.

Well, if we aren't going to survive there isn't any point in solving the problems on earth most of which aren't real problems anyway. Instead they are just professional victims seeking attention.

I am not arguing about whether he knows more about astro physics etc. but am arguing about priorities and the limited resources we have to tackle them. I do not believe astrophysics, string theory or theroretical physics will solve our immediate problems. Why are you calling names? Are you one of those people who resorts to name calling etc. when someone says something you disagree with? PS I went to the same uni as Hawkins.

Even if we made it to Alpha Proxima / Proxima Centauri the planet orbiting it Proxima B may not be habitable.

So telling Hawking to "shut up" is fine but name calling is where you draw the line? He never claimed it will solve our immediate problems, just that eventually, we have to move to survive. A fair observation I would say.

It's man that is destroying this planet, so he is advocating us going to another planet and eventually destroying that.

Hopefully, by the time we're capable of terraforming another planet, we'll have evolved to take care of it properly.

B S Misanthropic propaganda from the elite demonising the common masses, and gullibly you swallow this religion, More "wise" words from the establishment's puppet brain in a vat. He sure does a lot with his magic right cheek muscle, that we've never seen him enter text with. All that book writing, each character of which required multiple cheek twitches to move a cursor on a screen back and forth across the alphanumeric character set, presumably pausing for character confirmation, or a fast double twitch wich we've again have never seen. He does all this in between his "carers" pretending to feed him by shoving food up his nose because he can't swallow. See the video " "Stephen Hawking" is a lie system puppet (Lesta 2015-05-22) ". The guy is massively disabled and just sits there while the loudspeaker outputs other peoples propaganda. And because people think it's shameful questioning a disabled person, they swallow obvious B S unthinkingly. Genius when you think about it.

@potatopeeler - and what if it's *only* inhabited by lesser species/animals? Will we still slaughter them the way we are our own planet's?

Have you ever looked at Mars and Venus? One is dead planet and the other has a run away green house effect. How exactly could we destroy those countries
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
HarryReply togrumpy old git
Man is not destroing the planet but admittedly we may be making it uninhabitable for humans. The planet is more than capable of adjusting itself from any threat of human behaviour and will eradicate the threat itself.

DocHolidayReply togrumpy old git
@Dakota, If we could terraform a dead planet why would we not terraform the Earth back to habitable? The same with Mars as a rescue planet. If we can live in artificial habitats there we could live in the same ones here. At least the Earth has oxygen and water even if we have to clean it first.

Skeptic_1Reply togrumpy old git
It will be massively expensive to terraform a planet and we would still have all our eggs in one basket. It would also be easier to terraform a planet while there are only a few there, not over 7 billion. With earth we would be better managing the way we treat it and it would recover by itself. But that management would not be cheap either.

Not enough resources, food and water will eventually kill off humans.Unless some drastic halt to breeding occurrs asap,we will be killing ourselves off.

I know it's popular to downplay one's self and self deprecation is seen as an intelligent and attractive quality by many, but, humans are by far and away the most impressive species in the history of the planet. Sure, we've messed a lot of it up, but look at what's been achieved.

AureusReply toKim Jong-Uns Stylist
Humans are an experiment of nature and once all the resources we have made ourselves dependent on for our survival have run out within the next thousand yeras even our 'intelligence' wont save us. Severely depleted, human numbers will drop to millions then thousands through war, famine and disease. A few might remain only to slowly revert to an animal like existence. Sure, why not pack some off now to another part of the galaxy. Why?

@Norm De Plume I guess you haven't heard of Stalin and his militant league of atheists who killed more than any religion has in their lifetime. Atheists like you are an embarrassment, indoctrinated just like the liberals.

No one ever carried out atrocities in the name of Atheism. Just because Stalin was an Atheist it doesn't mean any atrocities were carried out because he was an Atheist, any more than they were carried out because he had a moustache. Religion on the other hand ...

Or alternatively we could spend the billions of dollars that would be spent on space travel making our planet clean and green once again. Why go and contaminate another world by carrying with us our attitude of contempt for the world we live on.
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
edmacdReply toJohn Bull
Alternatively, we could move beyond the silliness of money and learn to fully co-operate with one another, living with one another for one another. Every problem of modern life is due to the outlook instilled by politics, and these varying systems are simply a result of selfishness and complete ignorance. That is what we have to get beyond.

It won't happen as you have too many people on earth, and no one can agree with anything. Lookat the mess the uk is in because politicians wouldn't listen to the public over immigrants.

Twelve people have set foot on another world, The last ones 44 years ago next month. It's very slow progress, We could have a long future on this planet if we stop messing it up with pollution, wars, etc. And overpopulation is probably the cause of many of those things.

I wouldn't even call setting foot on a dust ball that amazing to be honest. They can't even do that safely or cheaply.40 years and that's not much progress is it.
