¿When men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing, they then become capable of believing in anything.¿ G.K. Chesterton. Wise words.......

Why do people think that quoting another person's words in their comments is a positive argument for something? Mr. Chesterton is entitled to his opinion; but in the end, it is only his opinion. It doesn't automatically make it right or wrong.

You think you command of the English language to be greater than Chesterton, priceless absolutely priceless.

Roger; not the brightest lamp in the pack. Surely forcing a belief that you will burn in hell for not abiding by your imaginary friend's "rules" is worse? But then, those who don't think for themselves are easier to manipulate.

Roger, their stupid words. People are inherently good or at the very least see the sense of getting along with their neighbours in an ordered society. The largest negative factor to all of this over history has been religion that sets groups against each other. In this case you've proved it by making yourself look a fool.

Really Hugh? So the 100 million dead in atheist regimes was just an aberration. Our society and that of the west as a whole is based on Christian values. Men like Wilberforce, women like Pankhurst strove to make society better because of their faith not because of their non belief. It is laughable to the extant to which atheists will go to avoid acknowledging where their morals come from.

This tired narrative is simply false. Stalin and Mao didn't kill anyone in the name of atheism, in fact they merely replaced the existing religions with the pseudo-religion of state worship and the idolising of a dictator (sounds very much like a religion actually doesn't it?) Atheism is not a political doctrine, it's simply the refusal to accept the unbelievable on little or no evidence. No doubt Roger is an atheist with regards to Zeus, Jupiter, Rah, Poseidon, Shiva, Vishnu etc. But for some reason believes his God to be the only correct one.

I like the tradition of church being a part of the backdrop of my culture. I don't want the churches to disappear altogether but, at the same time, I sure as hell don't want to go!

The Church stubbornly refuses to modernise, that's the problem. It would have been interesting to know what proportion of those that don't identify with any religion are actually atheists. Many non religious people still have a sense of God.

This is a good thing, let's hope all religions disappear very soon.

I think churches should be more visible in the community. Be more proactive in educating people new to faith who want to learn more about Christianity. And also be more welcoming to new visitors.

The descrition for religion changed many years ago to politics. Each religious group like the old church groups , gave themselves a name. Each propounded their beliefs to collect members, particularly members who might throw them a crust or two. So that today, here in Britain the new religions number many. We have the main three, Tory, Labour and Ukip. Their followers all believing the preachings of their church. In 600 years time. Will they be remembered or , will people even believe they existed.

You know Thunder Thighs, I agree. I would love to go to Church but I look around and I cant see one I might be welcome at or even walk through the door to.

Why do you think that sclerder? I've been into loads of churches, and never been made unwelcome at one.

You are in Germany I see. Maybe its different there? I have found that churches here are dominated by cliques . They have interests in certain groups , children, youth ( I do not mean that nastily) and families. Single and older, are invisible to them unless you have been there all your life.

Well, it's not surprising as there has been a concerted effort to wipe away Christianity from the national conscience for many decades now. When the light goes out, darkness takes over. We know who the light of the world is. This country once accepted the light and it became great. That light is only a flicker now, and we can already see the decay across the morality of the nation.

I believe in God/higher beings, I like old churches, I was christened and confirmed, I grew up and got a mind of my own. I don't do religion. Religion is a book of stories and rules written by man 2000 years ago.

God incarnated to a man through the normal process human being grows up, and He didn't create any religion. He simply commanded man to believe in Him and obey His commands

Not having a religion does not mean not believing in God. There are many thousands of people who are spiritual and don't belong to any denomination, so this research is wrong and misleading.

Don't forget that religion is very expensive, like a club, you have to pay to be a member, and keep tho keep those at the top in luxury, with the upkeep of their palaces, finery and servants, Just like the EU really ???

Bible magic never happened. It started with the Egyptians and other and stories about the sun, crops, nile flooding and their creatures morphed over the years into more human types until you get the bible rehash of it. The bible stories are multiples of Mem 40 and Nun 50 and 3 - Egyptian Empire seasons.

I am a Christian and proud of my religion. Wars will always be fought over religion ever since the year dot. If we all respected each others religion then there will be no trouble. Simple really.

Most people don't need religion to be told how to be a decent human being. If the only reason that you will not harm or kill another human is because a religious book tells you so, then that is worrisome.

The more advance the technology is, the more people leave their believe in God. They no longer there is a Creator of this universe.
